So if I may make a suggestion for a more complete and fully accurate comment, perhaps it could be slightly revised to read something like:

(there are two pressings of this 45, all of which incorrectly state a time of 2:58 on the record label - some pressings contain a 4 beat introduction and actually run 3:16, while others contain an 8 beat intro and actually run 3:18; all LPs were pressed with the 8 beat introduction and run 3:18)

(And John P., you're right about the "crackle-fest!") Sometimes the deadwax info can contain the exact same numbers/letters, but a different spacing/font for the written info can provide a tip that indicates a different pressing run. That is the case here. My "4-drum-hit" 45 intro shows deadwax as a single string of characters, "AP214NO-". My "8-drum-hit" 45 intro shows these same deadwax characters to be a little bit more broken up, appearing more like "AP 214 N O-". Short of listening to the actual 45s, this is the best I can do to provide a distinction between the shorter/longer intro 45 versions, just by eyeballing the vinyl.

The only reason I can think of is that in late '71/early '72 Boston's 2 Top 40 stations, WMEX & WRKO were going thru a phase where they were each trying to "out-AOR" each other, the result being a lot of pop/soul stuff fell by the wayside.
The only place I ever heard this song was on WRKO's FM station, WROR which ran a syndicated Drake format.

A personal fave of mine since it was a current, I always heard the "4-drum-hits" intro version on the radio in late '71. I am now 99.9% sure that the "4 vs 8 drum hits" is the only difference between the 2 versions. To me, those initial drum hits are so quick that I believe the 4-drum hit intro version runs (3:16), while the 8-drum hit version runs (3:18).
