I just did a new A/B comparison of the Remix Edit and the Todd Terry Club Mix intros and I now see what you're saying about the difference in the mixes. I thought I could edit down the Todd Terry Club Mix to match the Remix Edit, but the former intro is missing the staccato keyboard dub found on the latter intro.

Well, you're almost correct, Todd. I posted earlier that I remember the intros being different. My memory has not failed me! I heard the full-length "Todd Terry Club Mix" today (from the US commercial maxi CD single), and the "Remix Edit" is NOT just an edit of this mix. As I reread all the posts regarding Everything But the Girl's "Missing" in this thread, I've come to the realization I have mistakenly been referring to the Remix Edit and the Todd Terry Club Mix as though they are one in the same. They are not, which is probably why some confusion abounds. So I will attempt to straighten everything out by summarizing as follows:

==> The complete and unedited Todd Terry Club Mix runs 4:56. It appears as Track 3 on the Everything But the Girl "Missing" maxi-CD single, but is not the 45/single version nor the LP/album version. This 4:56 version also does not appear on any promo CD single copies to my knowledge.

==> The Todd Terry Remix Edit, shown only as "Remix Edit" on promo CD single copies, appears on the commercial cassette single and runs 4:09. This is the offical 45/single version.

==> The 4:09 Todd Terry Remix Edit is just an edit of the 4:56 Todd Terry Club Mix. As far as I can tell, there is no difference between the mixes themselves.

Todd, I think we've been agreeing all along, but we're misunderstanding each other. Brian is saying that the "Remix Edit" is a short version of the "Todd Terry Club Mix," so in other words, they aren't exactly the same. Sounds to me like you've just described the Todd Terry Club Mix to a tee! Based on your description, the Remix Edit on your promo CD is the Todd Terry Club Mix (a.k.a. the single version).

By the way, the commercial maxi-CD single of Everything But the Girl's "Missing" contains the complete and unedited version of the Todd Terry Club Mix on Track 3 running 4:56. This version can also be found on the CD: Hot Luv (EMI-Capitol Music Group 54547). I just pulled out my copy of the "Remix Edit" taken from the 2-track promo single. Here's the details:

Song starts with just the beat for four seconds. Then the music comes from 0:04 to 0:20. At the 20 second mark, the vocals begin. The song begins fading at 3:59 and is completely faded out by 4:09.

If my memory serves me right, the difference between the "Remix Edit" was not a big difference in length, but it was the way the intros were. Can anyone confirm what the intro of the "Todd Terry Club Mix" sounds like? It seems to me that it was just the beat all the way up to where the vocals started. In other words, the music didn't come in until the vocals did. Now that y'all bring this up, I seem to recall that the Remix Edit was added to later pressings of the CD album as an unlisted bonus track -- I think a sticker on the front of the packaging was the only indication it was on there. I don't think the remix was added to the album until the song was a hit. This could be false memory syndrome, as I'd completely forgotten about it, but I do seem to recall this being the case.
