I have no problem with edit points either, but most likely songs with edit
points that were posted in this forum are mostly ones where there is an LP
version, but not a 45 edit on CD. That may explain why you may not get so
many responses for Let's Groove edit (which is on a Comp) but there are
more edit point info for say, Let's Go Crazy by Prince, which has no 45 edit

I'm also not offended by anyone asking for edit points. I think the main problem you may encounter, Eric, is that you may not get many (or any) responses to these types of questions. Even for someone who does a lot of editing, such as myself, I often times cannot remember where the exact edit points are without going back to listen to both the long and short versions. It's probably much easier for someone to just send you a dub of the 45 (and far more accurate for your re-created edit).

That said, you will find that in some cases, I can easily recall where the edit points are, and I have posted a few in the past. Eric, if you own a CD or LP or 45, you can do edits to make a song shorter, edits to make it longer, custom edits, edits to match the 45 or an import 45, you can even overdub it with another song (although that may not sound that good.) You just can't sell your new creation for profit. You can even sell old CDs as used CDs. My point is you can do whatever you want with the CD sources you have including making edits. You're even allowed to make cassette recordings off CDs or LPs to listen to in your car if your car only has a cassette player. I'm no lawyer, but I believe there was a law (or case) in the late '70s that determined you were allowed to make your own personal tape copies of records -- for your own use. Just not for sale. Or public broadcast (unless you have a license to do so).

I can't speak for everyone on this board but I don't find your edit questions offensive and I'd be surprised if anyone else did. So feel free to ask away ....

I wonder if I may have made a faux pas with my questions asking about edit points for 45 versions of "Let's Groove."

Like many of you, I spend a lot of time and money tracking down music, and as a lifelong collector, I recognize the value of the record. In the last year or two, the board and Pat's books/database have definitely helped me find and verify countless 45 versions.

That said, when an edit can be fashioned from a version I've already purchased (and purchased many times, for most of these), for speed, convenience, and yes, money, I'm inclined to edit it myself. I guess this might be regarded as cheating the system. I know it's common in this circle to spend serious money on discs with one desired song. But I'd just as soon cut it myself, both for the sport and for the satisfaction in making the most of something from my collection.

Philosophically and ethically, I'd say, it seems reasonable to reassemble a recording one already owns. To be clear, I'm not asking anyone to send pirated music (in fact, I almost started an anti-piracy group in college). In cases where I've received mp3s, I've typically deleted such mp3s after replicating the edits from my own source.

I bring this up to raise the question of etiquette. To me, learning the edit points is quite interesting and helpful, though I could see why it might be bothersome to some.

So, what's the consensus? Are notes requesting/offering edit points okay? Offensive? Do you feel the same way for commonly available 45 versions as for rarities? If edit-point posts are out of line, I'll refrain.
