Author: MMathews
Subject: 2016
Posted: 26 July 2011 at 5:40pm

Oh, Pat...

Sorry for any misunderstanding, Aaron is totally correct as i was dripping with sarcasm.
Facetious at very least.
So i will clarify: Pat, I DO hear the bongos in the mono mix, and they are missing from the stereo mix. The new info boynamedfoo has brought is absolutely correct.
Therefore, unfortunately, any of the stereo edits are TECHNICALLY (see how i stressed that?) something like "edit of LP version to simulate 45 version" or maybe just simply "edit of LP version."
I don't know [sigh] I'll let y'all sort that out.

But, based on what i heard by comparing... the bongo overdubs ONLY appear on the mono 45 mix OR the re-channeled (fake stereo) versions made from that mono mix.

Now, all that are findings that should be shown in the database, for technical accuracy.

For ME, my above humorous statements meant that *I* personally don't care, I'll stick with the stereo mix. To me, the bongo overdubs are pretty low in the over-all mix. And for me, they don't add anything critical to this record..all the critical elements are present in the stereo, hence i nor most folks here ever even noticed they were missing, until this thread where a golden-ear has detected them.
I respect that the producers felt right at that moment that adding those bongos when they were editing down the mono mix might somehow help it be a hit. We'll never know, maybe they did!
All i know is, i wasn't missing them because they overdubbed them way in the background, so I'll stick with my stereo.

But again, for accuracy i must agree that the "45 version" distinction can only apply to the mono mixes that contain the added bongos/percussion.

Mark M

I do hear bongos starting at around 1:00 on the stereo version. If you listen especially from 1:30 to 1:40ish, you can hear them clearly on the mono version. They are completely missing from the stereo versions that are currently listed as "45 version."

Versions that run 6:56ish but are in stereo will need a "neither" or "edit of LP version" comment.

Edited by aaronk

Until the late 80's a friend showed me the "All Directions" album and the magnum 13+ minute version.. and it was the first i ever heard it in stereo. I was WOW'd.

At least this new discovery explains all the stupid re-channeling all those years. Those who knew, at Motown, who were still around in those years must have known they added something to the single mix.

But, in CD era, I was SO happy when a single edit in STEREO finally came along.
Last night i carefully compared the 45 mix with the stereo mix. I even wanted to see if i could synchronize the missing bongos (yes, they sound like bongos to me, can be congas...whatever)...
But, they are SO low in the mix, that a synch is not possible to make them audible in stereo.
So, i dismiss their existence! Yes, i am turning my back on the mono...i am covering my ears and saying "la-la-la-la-la" i can't hear them! :-)
So there.

As Eeyore would say about it: "thanks for noticing...."
Sigh.

MM
