To my knowledge, no shorter version was ever issued in the US. The UK clearly used an edited version on their 7" single, but I don't know if the listed running time is correct. I'd still like to know where these 3:35 - 3:47 edits originally came from...

Here is a 7" single from Germany with a version listed at 3:30. (There's also a German maxi-single CD listing this length.)

Here is a UK "radio edit" listed as running 4:06.

I don't find a shorter radio promo for the United States in Discogs, which continues to surprise me.

Jim's memory is correct about a promo CD not existing. [The first issued promo CD by Profile Records was Rob Base's "Joy And Pain" (catalog # PCD-PRO1), which was the third single from the album, after "It Takes Two" and "Get On The Dance Floor." This same disc also includes a second song called "Love Story" by Judy Torres.]

As for the version I have from an import CD, it cuts off the intro (starting with "hit it") and edits out the last verse & chorus. The edit runs 3:35.

For what it's worth, if you take the full 5:00 version and only edit out the last verse & chorus (leave the intro intact), the resulting file would be 3:47. Could that, perhaps, be the short 3:46 version on CD? I don't have a copy to check, so it's only speculation at this point.

Gene, there was no promo CD single issued for this - we only got in a
promo 45. And it has the exact same, listed (4:58), actual (5:00) version
that appears on the stock 45, on both sides of the promo (both sides'
deadwax info are exactly the same: "PRO-5186 1-1").

FYI, our station did skip past the first :12 1/2 seconds when we played it
as a current. We carted up the end result, so the song started off on-air
with the "hit it". But there was never a 2nd promo 45 that trimmed off that
intro (or anything else, for that matter), to my knowledge.

Gene, the good news for you, at this point, is that we've long ago finished
combing through all of the 80's Top 40 hits with a fine tooth comb,
searching for DJ 45 short edits. I worked in the music dept of the same
Top 40 station for the entire decade of the 80's. I own copies of all the
promo 45s. We always got very good service from the labels, and I always
kept a very careful eye out for second promos issued, with different
versions included. Therefore, we've long ago documented any and all
short promo 45s that existed. I hadn't replied to this thread earlier,
because I didn't join Pat's board 'til '06, and the three earlier posts were
all from way back to the early days of this forum, in 2005. But rest
assured, I would've followed up if there was something domestically
unique to report.

I have a version on an import CD single that has the "Vocal Edit" version, which is just an edit of the LP Version. The LP version and every commercial single copy of "It Takes Two" I've seen is the 5:00 version. But as you know, Top 40 radio stations traditionally don't like to program songs with this long of a run time so it sounds like the 3:46 version might be a radio edit.   Does anyone have a promo DJ single copy of "It Takes Two" with this shortened edit?
