But as a (belated) follow-up, just in case others may be interested in tracking down OMD's "Take You Tonight" on CD, I can now add this: It turns out the folks at CBS/Sony must've read my post here (lol), because in November of '05 - just SIX MONTHS after my initial post above - the song's original parent album from 1980 was re-issued on CD here in the U.S. for the first time ever! It came out on the New Era label, through Sony BMG Music Entertainment, catalog no. A 96025; naturally, I bought a new (sealed) copy several years ago. However, as this re-issue is now six years old, I'm afraid it's since gone out-of-print, and hence you'll have to pay a few extra dollars for one on the secondary market - but if you liked the mellow "west coast" pop sound that was popular in the late '70s/early '80s, it's well worth it...

And being on a small indie label, ia Records, it's very unlikely anyone would even know where to license it from. Author: 80smusicfreak
Subject: 217
Posted: 07 May 2005 at 9:37am

Thanks for the tip, EdisonLite! I'd never been to that
web site before (apparently they've since changed their
URL to www.gracenote.com), but just checked it out.
Entering the exact song title ("Take You Tonight")
yielded two CD sources for the OMD song I've been looking
for, and both of them V/A compilations. (As I suspected,
according to their database, the tune has never appeared
on an OMD CD to date.)

One is titled "The Very Best of Country Rock", and gives
very little additional info. And upon reading the track
listing, I'm pretty sure I've never seen that particular
CD collection before, as it leans a bit more toward
country artists, and really doesn't have anything else
that would interest me...

However, the other is a different story - it's titled
"The Best of Southern Rock", and while it lists only two
CDs in the set, it says it came out on GSC Music in 1995.
Not only is that date right in the ballpark, but GSC
Music is indeed the company that makes those exclusive
3-CD sets for the clubs from Sony Music Special Products
as I described above! So while their listings are missing
the third disc, I'm 99% certain that's the one I saw back
in the late '90s, as it does have other tracks on it that
are in line w/ my musical tastes. So now I have the title
of the collection, anyway - just wish it wasn't such a
common one ("Best of Southern Rock")! :-(

As for the song's possible inclusion in Rhino's "Radio
Daze" series, yeah, I've noticed that they stuck w/ just
top 40 hits. (It's been 7-8 years since I last saw a
sealed copy of any of the volumes in that series, so I
honestly don't recall what the promo stickers on the
shrink-wrap said, lol.) I just meant that "TYT" was from
the very same time period (1980), and has the exact same
soft rock/AC feel as most of the other songs that did
make the cut. A shame about Dann Rogers' "Looks Like Love
Again" - that happens to be a song that has eluded me
even on cassette to this date (I collect very little
vinyl), so I'm pretty sure I've never heard it before,
but always wanted
to...

If you look closely at all the songs that made the first 5 volumes, none peaked below the top 40. In fact, I tried very hard to get Dann Roger's "Looks Like Love Again" in the series, but I was not allowed to because it peaked at #41 in Billboard! If you've ever noticed the stickers that are appear on front of the sealed copies, it even mentions something like "all top 40 hits", so I guess they felt a #41 peaker would be an issue.

To answer your question as to which CD contains the song in question, you should go to www.cddb.com and hit the "search" button, then type the group name and song name in, and it should tell the title of the CDs containing the song (although not the label or catalog #). It's an extremely comprehensive list and includes imports. It doesn't contain every CD in the world but I've never seen a list more comprehensive than this, so try it, and let us know if you find what you're looking for.

    Author: 80smusicfreak
Subject: 217
Posted: 07 May 2005 at 1:52am

Since EdisonLite recently posted an inquiry here about a
non-top 40 hit (Don Ray's "Got to Have Loving"), I
thought I'd try the same...

In the Spring of 1980, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils
scored their last pop hit w/ a song titled "Take You
Tonight". (Sadly, it reached only #67 in "Billboard" and
#83 in "Cash Box", so understandably, it's not included
in Pat's book.) I have the song's original parent album,
simply titled "Ozark Mountain Daredevils" (Columbia
36375) on cassette, and have always liked the tune. But
because by that time the band had left its original
label, A&M, and jumped to Columbia, A&M/Universal has
never included the song on any of its OMD compilations to
date. (The masters to that 1980 album obviously still
belong to Columbia/Sony, and I assume A&M/Universal has
never attempted to license any of those songs from them.)
So to the best of my knowledge, "Take You Tonight" has
yet to appear on an OMD CD in the U.S...

However, as folks here may know, there are now several
popular wholesale club chains (e.g., Sam's Club, BJ's
Wholesale Club, Costco, etc.), which always have a small
music dept. that includes multi-disc compilations sold
exclusively at those clubs. And it just so happens that
Sony's "Sony Music Special Products" division supplies a
lot of those collections (packaged in the old-style
cardboard longboxes) to these clubs. Most of the ones
from Sony are 3-CD sets; some are dedicated entirely to
a single artist, while others are V/A comps. (Check out
www.timelessmusic.com to see examples.)

Anyway, back in the late '90s, I remember shopping at one
of those club chains (I believe it was BJ's), and seeing
"Take You Tonight" on one of those 3-CD sets by Various
Artists. It caught my attention because I know it was the
first time I'd ever seen "TYT" on CD, and knowing that it
was a lesser-known chart hit, I was impressed. (BTW,
"TYT" would've fit perfectly in Rhino's "Radio Daze"
series!) But alas, I didn't buy it at the time, and
haven't seen this collection again in years - nor have I
ever seen "TYT" on another CD since! By chance does
anyone here know the title of that collection, along w/
the label & catalog no., so I can possibly track it
down??? Of course, I realize the collection I saw some
7-8 years ago is now probably out-of-print. :-( Or does
anyone know of another CD that includes
"TYT"???
