Author: crapfromthepast
Subject: 2322
Posted: 26 October 2014 at 5:49pm

Another Fleetwood Mac-assisted track from the late '70s, joining Walter Egan's "Magnet And Steel", Warren Zevon's "Werewolves Of London", and Kenny Loggins's "Whenever I Call You Friend".

LP and commercial 45 versions (runs 4:22)

The oldest CD I have with "Gold" is Warner Special Products' 2-CD Ultimate Party Album (1992), where it runs 4:20. The same analog transfer is used for Warner Special Products' 2-CD 40 Summer Fun Hits (1993).

Bill Inglot did a new analog transfer for Rhino's Have A Nice Day Vol. 22 (1993), where it runs 4:22. Here, the tail of the fade is a good two seconds longer than the earlier discs, but is truncated before fading to complete silence. This mastering sounds like it uses lower-generation source tapes than the earlier discs. The same analog transfer is used for:

Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 34 Late '70s (1993)

Time-Life's AM Gold Vol. 26 1979 (1997; digitally identical)

Time-Life's 2-CD Singers And Songwriters Vol. 5 1978-1979 (2000; differently EQ'd digital clone)

Time-Life's 2-CD Seventies Music Explosion Vol. 2 Escape (2005; differently EQ'd digital clone)

Promo 45 edit (runs 3:37)

This version has yet to appear on CD, as far as I know.

Here are editing instructions for recreating the promo 45 edit from the LP/commercial 45 version on Have A Nice Day:

Segment 1
281 beats long, begin counting on first downbeat, ends on a snare
Extends from 0:00.0 to 2:15.1 of the LP/commercial 45 version and promo 45 edit

Remove the 64 beats from 2:15.1 to 2:44.8 of the LP/commercial 45 version.

Segment 2
81 beats long, begins on a snare, ends on a downbeat
Extends from 2:44.8 to 3:23.2 of the LP/commercial 45 version
Extends from 2:15.1 to 2:53.4 of the promo 45 edit

Remove the 32 beats from 3:23.2 to 3:38.4 of the LP/commercial 45 version.

Segment 3
Begins on downbeat
Extends from 3:38.4 to 4:27.3 (end) of the LP/commercial 45 version
Extends from 2:53.4 to 3:42.3 (end) of the promo 45 edit

Edited by crapfromthepast

First one sounds pretty noticable.

Using Class Reunion '79 as a source, the first edit point is 2:14 to 2:44, both places on the word "cause". (works better if you edit on the word "gold" but that's not what they did..) Second edit is 3:22- 3:37. After the little organ swipe on the beat you could imagine "People" coming in, they jump to the "People" at 3:37.
