I'm not fond of those, from the little snippets I've heard. I have the original Atlantic '80s-era CD of Duke, which sounds pretty muffled, but I think that's as good as it gets for this album.

The 45 version seems like an edit of the LP version, not a remix.

My notes say the to create the 45 edit, remove 0.00.0-0.01.9 and 0.09.8-0.14.6 of LP version from Duke, then add a 39-beat fade at 3.06.7.

These seem consistent with Plastic Steel's instructions from a few years back.

    Author: Plastic Steel
Subject: 2454
Posted: 02 March 2016 at 9:26pm

Trying to determine if the 45 is a different mix. If it is, it's subtle. The LP version is a little muddy, and the 45 seems a bit brighter, but it could be an EQ issue (note that I'm comparing it to the original Duke album from 1980 and not the 2007 remasters). I'd say their "Man On The Corner," which is also a subtle single mix, is a more noticeable remix than this one could be.

Nevertheless, for those looking to create the single edit from the LP version:

Remove the first 2 seconds (the hi-hat) and begin right when the guitar first comes in.

Keep the next 4 measures (16 beats). The bass will start coming in during the fourth measure (around beat #13 or so).

Remove a segment starting on the 17th beat (the beginning of the 5th measure) at the (LP's :09.7 / 45's :07.8 ) mark to when the keyboard chord comes in at the (LP's :15.2 / 45's :07.8) mark. The keyboards come in right after Phil Collins' 4-count.

There are no more edits. Start your fade at around 3:07 (during Phil's falsetto "I can see another face"). My copy fades out to zero at 3:27.

Edited by Plastic Steel

I have a CD called Pop Dreams And Rock Tracks - The Earthquake Album in which the mix of "Turn It On Again" is quite different (seems real hot to me--Phil Collins' overlapping vocals on the "turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again" close seem much more in front).

Is that a case of just being mixed differently?
