The mix sounds the same to me between the LP and 45 versions (not hearing any "whoosh" on the intro to either one). Jody is correct, though, that there is something overdubbed on the intro of the LP version, which sounds like a mistake to me. It's almost as if the recording engineer was hitting the talkback button for a second and mumbling into it. That's precisely why I would call the 45-rpm disc a remix. I haven't heard this song in awhile, but if my memory serves me correctly on the LP version, there is a "click" sound, followed by Lou Gramm saying "four" in to a echoey sounding mic. It's only about five to ten seconds in, but it cannot be removed from the LP.

Also, does not the LP version have a brighter midrange, while the 45-rpm has an attenuated upper midrange?

I compared the LP and 45 versions on a bunch of different discs, and I really can't hear any mix differences between the two. There are really drastic EQ difference among some CDs, but I don't hear any other differences.

I have the LP version on:

• PolyTel Canada's Hot Sounds (1988)
• Quality Canada's This Is Music 5 (1989)
• Atlantic's Very Best Of And Beyond (1992; best-sounding of the bunch)
• Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 10 1988 (1995; digitally exactly 1.1 dB quieter than Very Best Of And Beyond)
• Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 8 On My Mind (1996, uses same analog transfer as Very Best Of And Beyond)

I haven't figured out what to do to the intro of the LP version to edit it down to the 45, but the other there are just two other edits and an early fade.

Using the timings from Very Best Of And Beyond, remove the 16 beats from 2:04.9 to 2:14.5 and the 32 beats from 3:09.1 to 3:28.3, and put a 24-beat fade from 3:53 to 4:06.

The 45 version on Rock Dreams is EQ'd a little bright, so that you can very plainly hear the edit at 1:53.7 (you'll hear the remnants of a crash cymbal disappear at the edit - it's not as obvious on the other discs due to the different EQ), and you probably won't hear the edit at 2:48.3.

I have the 45 version on:

• Atlantic's Year In Review 1988 (1989)
• Time-Life's 2-CD Rock Dreams (1993; uses same analog transfer as Atlantic's Year In Review)
• Swaitek's The A List Disc 45 (1994, based on Atlantic's ... disc but has absolute polarity inverted and may have additional noise reduction)
• Warner Special Products' 2-CD Lost In Love (1994; uses same analog transfer as Rock Dreams and Atlantic's Year In Review 1988)
• JCI's Only Love 1985-1989 (1996, uses same analog transfer as Rock Dreams and Atlantic's Year In Review 1988)
• Warner Special Products' 2-CD Sweet Love (1996, uses same analog transfer as Rock Dreams and Atlantic's Year In Review 1988)
• Warner Special Products' 2-CD Touched By Love (1997, uses same analog transfer as Rock Dreams and Atlantic's Year In Review 1988)
• Madacy's Rock On 1988 Endless Summer Nights (1998, digitally exactly 1 dB quieter than Rock Dreams)
  
• Complete Greatest Hits (2002, new analog transfer, too loud and clips a lot)
• Time-Life's 2-CD Classic Soft Rock Vol. 11 Sweet Freedom (2007, digitally exactly 0.229 dB louder than Complete Greatest Hits)

I used the Atlantic's Year In Review 1988 version in my own library.

Does anyone know which CDs have the 45 remix and which ones have the regular mix shortened to 45 length? In the database, all of the shorter versions are noted as 45 versions. I agree.
The 45 has "remix" description on the record labe.
The 45's echo effect is stronger than the LP version.
Especially, the backing chorus is outstanding on the 45. For example, at 3:30 on the 45 and at 4:04 on the LP.

While trying to determine which CD in my collection contains the best sounding 45 version of Foreigner's "I Don't Want to Live Without You", I discovered something interesting... On the Rock Dreams (Time-Life R105-40) compilation, I notice the song's intro leads off with an airy "whoosh-like" sound effect underneath the synthesizer fade-in. However, on the 1985 - Only Love - 1989 (JCI 3186) and Complete Greatest Hits (Atlantic/Rhino 78266) discs, I don't hear the sound effect during the intro.
