The most obvious difference is a tom tom fill before the first verse
starts.

What are the easily identified differences between the LP version and single mix?

Regarding Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal", Pat has entered Jim's promo CD single info into the database. I also wanted to add that commercial 45 copies run 4:09. (Timing info compliments of abagon. i have the five track US promo, it leaves off the single version. there is also an Instrumental version floating around a scarse 3" Japanese cd.
