Some more observations:

In addition to the differences Aaron noted, the Single Version on the promo CD has narrower stereo, evident in the panning of the cymbal crashes, e.g. at 0:07.

The LP Version on the promo CD runs 3:32.6, so I'm tempted to say it's 3:33. I'm never really sure about rounding when it's right in the middle, though.

Both versions on the promo CD run 0.5% slower than the album version on CD (at least, the Japanese CD, cat# CP32-5620). That one runs 3:32.

It's either sped up or tuned sharp. To get the instruments tuned to the standard A4=440 Hz, you'd have to slow down the promo CD by another 1.3%, and the album by 1.8%!

The matrix number on the run out groove of my commercial 45 is just all the same as the ed's number.

A sound volume of this commercial 45 is very lower from "3:28".

my commercial 45 issued as emi manhattan 50167 states the version as "single version" with a listed time of 3:31 but actually runs 3:29

Since the database currently only notes promo single info for Vixen's "Cryin'", I'll pass along that the actual and printed commercial 45 run time is 3:31 and states "Single Version" on the record label. Thank you for your very insightful report, Aaron. This situation sounds similar to Cheap Trick's "Can't Stop Falling Into Love" where the 45 and LP versions consist of mix differences so minute that they can't be detected unless a keen ear is listening to a direct A/B comparison. Here's another case of "why bother?" The only difference between the "LP Version" and "Single Version" on the promo CD single is that there are two places where a vocal has been brought forward just a tiny bit, and the keyboard on the intro is just a tad louder.

1) At 1:26, the harmony vocal is mixed ever-so-slightly louder on the "single version."

2) At 2:58, the adlib vocal is brought ever-so-slightly forward in the mix.

The difference is pretty insignificant, so no database notation would be warranted, even if the 45 does contain the "single version." My promo CD single for this (DPRO-04214) has two different cuts included, with no listed times:

1-LP Version (actual time 3:32)
2-Single Version (actual time 3:31)
