I just went back to re-read Ron's post about how to edit the LP version to match the 45 version and he does mention that his U.S. commercial 45 has a run time of 4:34, which is identical to Pat's DJ 45 length. I notice that database comments for Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative" first states that "both dj and commercial copies of this 45 run (4:32) not (4:25) as stated on the record label", but then goes on to say that "commercial copies of this 45 run (4:37) not (4:25) as stated on the record label". Were there two separate commercial 45 pressings sporting a :05 length difference, or is the initial 4:32 timing info listed in error? my commercial 45 issued as mca 53383 states a run time of 4:25 but actually runs 4:37 and is identical to the version on the below cd

Here are instructions on how to create the edited versions from the LP version.

I have the LP version on these CDs (all are 110.2 BPM):

• Rock The First Vol. 1 (Sandstone D233041-2, 1992; 4:53; mastered by Steve Hoffman and is best-sounding of the bunch)
• Ultra Mix - Dance Hits Of The '80s And '90s (Time-Life M18517, 1999; 4:51; mastered by Dennis Drake and also sounds terrific)
• Sounds Of The Eighties - 1988-1989 (Time-Life R988-30 A26302, 1995; 4:53)

The true US 45 runs 4:34 and is also 110.2 BPM, with just one edit in it at 3:22.2. It can be created by keeping 0:00.0-3:22.2 and 3:39.6-4:53.5 of the LP version, or, equivalently, removing 32 beats of the LP version from 3:22.2-3:39.6.

I assume that the true US 45 is the same as track #2 on the promo CD single, since its posted and actual times are the same as for that track.

The UK 45 is the same as track #1 on the promo CD single ("CHR Edit") and runs a teeny bit faster at 110.4 BPM. I have this version on these CDs, but all are a little muddy-sounding compared to the LP versions listed above:

• Awesome '80s (Razor & Tie OPCD-4551, 1994; 3:31)
• Now 1989 (Virgin EMI PolyGram UK 8 27077 2, 1993; 3:27)
• The Hits Album Vol. 10 (CBS Phonogram Polydor WEA Holland, 1989; 3:30)

The UK 45 is an early fade of the US 45 version. It can be created by keeping 0:00.0-3:22.2 and 3:39.6-4:53.5 of the LP version, or, equivalently, removing 32 beats of the LP version from 3:22.2-3:39.6. Finally, there is a 24-beat fade out from 3:16-3:29, so the edit from the first step actually falls during the fade-out.

I found that the difference in sound quality between the LP version (Rock The First) and the CHR Edit (Awesome '80s) is so large that I made my own edit from the Rock The First CD. This is an anomaly, though; the rest of Awesome '80s sounds superb, and overall, Awesome '80s is one of the finest-sounding US-'80s-hits collections in existence.

Sorry I missed this post previously. My promo CD single (CD45-17717) features two cuts:

1-My Prerogative (CHR Edit) (listed and actual time (3:32))
2-My Prerogative (no version designation specified) (listed time 4:25; actual time 4:33)

My notation for this, written back when it was a current, stated that we played "Cut 2" on-the-air back in 1989, FYI. I also own the disc with the "highly edited" version. I'm not sure whether it was a dj edit, but I do know I heard the same edited version on the radio in the mid-to-late 90s. I have a couple of additonal questions. First, is the 45 version simply an edit of the LP version.
