Indeed, I should have clarified when describing the versions that Pettibone's 5:46 mix, as used on the album, is a somewhat unique version, as compared to the European 7"/12" remixes he did and the original US hit versions he didn't do. It amazes at the assumptions that are always made. The
album version of "Rumors" was an earlier different vocal
and instrumental version. It nowhere as tight and in all
honesty sounds like a demo. You wouldn't be gaining much as
it is something totally different. Tunes that have
different track timings aren't always just edits.

Everybody I know (including me) was playing the 12".
Constantly. I wouldn't even think of playing it off an LP
due to fear of rolled-off low end...

It's odd to me that the LP version is longer than the 12"
version (which is actually labeled "short version").

Does anybody know if the clubs at the time were playing the 12" (as I would assume), or were they pulling it off the LP to get more track length?

That’s interesting about the LP version being mixed by Shep Pettibone.
Musically, the LP version is somewhat close to the original 12” Short
Version (and 45 version) but with an obviously different vocal take. The
longer Shep “Remix” found on overseas 12” singles has a completely
different feel from the LP version with several additional elements. I

The LP version is a Shep Pettibone remix which comes in several variations:

• 5:46 Rumors [1st track on the album]
• 4:16 Vicious Rumors (Euromix) [last track on the album]
• 4:11 Rumors (Re-Mix) [non-US/MX/UK/IE 7" A-side; UK/IE 7" B-side]
• 7:41 Rumors (Remix aka Extended Mix) [non-US/MX 12" A-side]
• 8:55 Rumors (Dub Version) [on CA/AU/NZ/JP 12"]
• 4:50 Rumors (Shep's Dub Version) [on UK 12"; =1st half & last few bars of 8:55 dub]

Only the two album mixes were released in the U.S.

The original King/Foster mixes are just these, AFAIK:

• 4:53 Rumors [US 12" A-side, subtitled "Short Version"]
• 7:08 Vicious Rumors [US 12" B-side, subtitled "Long Version"]
• 3:33 Rumors [US/UK/IE 7" A-side, an early fade of the "Short Version"]

The UK got a remix 12" with two versions by Dancin' Danny D:

• 5:11 Dancing Danny 'D' Remix
• 3:30 Hip Hop 'n' Go Go

I also ran across a 3:49 version of the Hip Hop 'n' Go Go mix, not sure where it came from.

Lastly, someone pointed me to a 2001 UK compilation CD which has a unique Shep Pettibone mix on it: Blues & Soul: The Soul Years 1966–1969: vol. 10 (1986–1987). That mix is 5:44 and is identical to the 4:11 Re-Mix until the break. The break has some unique elements, and then after the break the song continues on a bit longer.

Thanks Aaron. I pulled that out last night and clarified this. I know an edit was made of this version (at the beginning) plus an early fade. But the 12" single version was what what I heard most
