My 45 version came out better than the actual 45 heard on the radio. The

I found a cheap copy of the full-length Warrior album on CD (Columbia CK 39173, 1984), so I revisited "The Warrior".

I have the LP version on quite a few CDs, and all seem to use the same analog transfer as the full-length Warrior. Someone at Columbia did it right the first time, so there was no need to do another analog transfer years down the road (at least on the CDs that I have). The LP version runs 3:59 on Warrior.

There are plenty of CDs that all use the same analog transfer as Warrior but all run a second or two shorter than Warrior by shortening the very end of the fade:

• CBS Records Compact Disc Demonstration II (1984; digitally exactly 0.5 dB louder)
• Priority's Eighties Greatest Rock Hits Vol. 2 (1992; too loud and clips a lot)
• Sandstone's Rock The First Vol. 4 (1992)
• Sony's Big Hits Of The 80's (1993; digitally exactly 0.6 dB quieter but fades early from 3:35 to 3:51)
• Razor & Tie's 2-CD Awesome '80s (1994; sounds extremely close to Big Hits Of The 80's, including early fade)
• Priority's Rock Of The '80s Vol. 14 (1994; too loud and clips a bit)
• Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 6 1984 (1994; differently-EQ'd digital clone of Eighties Greatest Rock Hits Vol. 2)
• JCI's Eighteen Screamers From The '80s (1995; sounds extremely close to Big Hits Of The 80's, including early fade)
• Sony's Rock Almanac Vol. 1 The 1980s (1995; differently-EQ'd digital clone of Warrior)
• Time-Life's Guitar Rock Vol. 18 The Heavy '80s (1995; digitally exactly 1.9 dB louder than Rock The First Vol. 4)
• Sony's Forever Rock Vol. 3 (1996; differently-EQ'd digital clone of Warrior)

The 45 is an edit of the LP version.

I have the 45 edit on exactly one CD from a tape source (PolyGram Canada's Here Come The Hits from 1985, which is pretty $$$$). I also have the 45 edit on swaitek's promo 50-CD The A List Disc 23 (1994), where it's taken from vinyl and uses noise reduction - avoid.

Here are instructions for creating the 45 edit from the LP version. I used Warrior as my source; the others will work just fine.

Segment 1
Extends from 0:00 to 2:29.5 of LP version and 45 edit
Extends 16 beats into the guitar solo
Ends on a downbeat

Remove the 16 beats from 2:29.5 to 2:37.2 of the LP version.

Segment 2
Begins on a downbeat
4 beats long
Extends from 2:29.5 to 2:31.4 of the 45 edit
Extends from 2:37.2 to 2:39.1 of the LP version
Ends on a downbeat

Remove the 16 beats from 2:39.1 to 2:46.8 of the LP version.

Segment 3
Begins on a downbeat
Extends from 2:31.4 to 3:35.1 of the 45 edit
Extends from 2:46.8 to 3:50.6 of the LP version

Fade
Begins on a downbeat
16 beats long
Extends from 3:27.4 to 3:35.1 of the 45 edit
Extends from 3:42.8 to 3:50.6 of the LP version

Your mixdown will run 3:35.1, with edits at 2:29.5 and 2:31.4.

If you use Forever Rock Vol. 3 as the source, subtract one second from all of the above times.

Okay, I finally got a copy of the Canadian "Bring on the Hits" from Ebay, and it does indeed have what appears to be the 45 version of "The Warrior," running 3:33.

It also appears it may have some unique 45 versions, which I'll detail in the "45 versions in import CDs" thread, so go there.

I have this track on two CDs, one of which is Here Come The Hits on Polytel CBS Direct from 1985. "The Warrier" runs about 3:36 on this CD, so I would assume it's the single edit. The CD also features a couple of other single edits.
