I remember cleaning up the Maureen McGovern 45 and got it to sound like master tape. Then I ended up getting a tape source of that very single from someone who was at the recording session and saved a great quality version. I forgot about the Jeffrey Comanor or Deardroff & Joseph versions. I just found a video of a commercial 45 being played on a
Technics 1200. The 45 runs 2:47. With Jim's commercial 45
running 2:44, promo 45 running 2:47 and Ed's 45 running

The First charting version by Deardorff & Joseph was played in
Chicago on WBBM-FM. It charted a year and a half prior to the England
Dan version. I see it bubbled under at #109 in Billboard but hit #22 on
the Easy Listening charts.

For those who may not have known, around the time this song was released as a single, another version by Maureen McGovern was released but failed to chart and apparently wasn't on an album. I assume that's the reason why it's never been on any of her compilations and most likely has never seen the light of day on CD. However, Maureen's version is on YouTube (from vinyl, of course) so for anyone who might be interested, here it is.

Man, if I had a quarter for every time Ed and I have come up with different
actual timings over the years, despite identical deadwax info, I could sure
buy myself a lot more 45's!!!   :(   And then being called on to later defend
my timings, and refute contrary, after-my-report info submitted by Ed,
yet again, always puts me in a great mood....(Can anyone say "Jim Root
Canal?")

Nonetheless, I press on here, in the name of ultimate accuracy. My stock
45, which debuted on BB on 2/25/78 and I bought just 3 days after its
debut week, again has a listed time of (2:49), and again has an actual time
of (2:44). Deadwax info for this copy is "ST-BT-34730-10 1-1".

I also pulled my stereo/stereo Big Tree 16110 promo 45. It is unusual for
this era that it does not feature a mono/stereo configuration. One stereo
promo 45 side matches Ed's deadwax info exactly: "ST-BT-34730-1",
while the other side's deadwax is "ST-BT-34730-2". Both sides have listed
times of (2:49), and actual times of (2:47). No more. No less. (2:47). As
Doug has correctly pointed out, the (2:49) CD versions clearly sound
"slow" to me, compared to both my 1978 radio memories or either of the
45 versions I just played/re-timed.

To my ears just now, my stock 45 copy's ending seconds clearly
truncates *much* more severely than either side of my promo 45 did.
When time allows, I will forward dubs of both my stock & promo 45
versions to my usual experts, as I think there's at least a chance that the
two versions' last (1:00) or so may contain some edit point differences
between them.

Did we ever figure out if there's a speed difference or if there are two
different 45 pressings? My recollection continues to be that the CD

my commercial 45 for the england dan & john ford coley song "we'll never have to say goodbye again" issued as big tree 16110 states the run time on the label as 2:49 and does indeed run 2:49 and is identical to the version from the below cd...the run-out groove etching is "st-bt-34730-1"....jim, does your's match mine?
