Author: crapfromthepast
Subject: 3510
Posted: 23 May 2008 at 5:51pm

abagon - It surprises me that the commercial 45 is the (4:36) album version. I've always had the promo 45, which is edited, and I assumed that the commercial 45 was also edited.

My promo 45 has "Edit" (printed 4:00) on one side and "LP Version" (printed 4:36) on the other. I can't confirm an actual time because I haven't played it lately. The promo 45 edit from the promo 45 is available on Atlantic's Year In Review: 1988 (Atlantic PR 2566-2, 1989), where it has a printed time of (4:00) and an actual time of (4:00).

Here are instructions for creating the promo 45 edit from the LP version on Judson Spence (Atlantic 7 81902-2, 1988):

Remove the short a cappella intro from 0:00-0:03.5.
Keep the two snare hits and the 252 beats that follow from 0:03.5-2:41.8.
Edit on downbeat.
Remove the 32 beats from 2:41.8-3:05.8.
Keep 3:05.8-4:22.5.
Add a 24-beat fade from 4:07.2-4:22.5. (This is just an accelerated fade, and shaves maybe 15 seconds off the tail of the LP version.)

Your mixdown will run about 3:58.6, with edits at 0:00 and 2:41.8 and a 24-beat fade from about 3:43.2-3:58.6.

Love the song - we played the album quite a lot on our college station back in '88/'89.

Atlantic serviced us with promo 45s at the time, and in addition to "Yeah Yeah Yeah" (Atlantic 7-88999, printed 4:00), we got 45s for "Hot And Sweaty" (Atlantic 7-89010, "Edit" with printed time of 3:50 on one side, "LP Version" with printed time of 4:49 on the other) and "Love Dies In Slow Motion" (Atlantic 7-88957, "Edited Remix" with printed time of 4:30 on both sides). All three came with picture sleeves (same as commercial 45s), and there's a tiny, beloved "When you PLAY IT, SAY IT!" sticker on the front of "Hot & Sweaty".

FYI - the 45 numbering is screwy, and they arrived in the order I listed. The picture sleeves list the commercial 45 B-sides, which are:
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah / Dance With Me
Hot & Sweaty / Higher
Love Dies In Slow Motion (Remix)/ Everything She Do

The B-sides are all on the album. I was a big fan of the album way back when, and I think I'll haul out "Hot & Sweaty" for the radio show tonight...

Edited by crapfromthepast
