yes...brian was kind enough to forward me a file of the
mono version from the motown singles 1970 cd and it is the
correct single, mono version....i just A/B'ed it versus the
vinyl 45........thx brian for your help!!

Ron tells me that the Complete Motown Singles 1970 version is correct. Ed - Great observation!

I compared my promo 45 with Ultimate Collection,
and I discovered that it's not just a simple edit,
either.

The two stay in perfect synch until 2:50.2.

The two beats from 2:50.2 to 2:51.5 have a prominent horn
line on the 45. There's no horn line on the CD version.

The 4 beats from 2:51.5 to 2:53.8, which has the sung
line, "you need like like I do don't you", are present on
the 45, but are cut out of the CD version. As a result,
the CD version gets to the bridge exactly 4 beats before
the 45 version does. The 45 has the sung line, where the
CD goes into the bridge right from the drum fill. The
stereo versions have the same structure as the 45, with
the sung line before the bridge.

After the edit, the 45 is slightly faster than the CD
version; the two were perfectly in synch before the edit.

My ears aren't good enough to detect a change in pitch
after the edit in either the 45 or the CD, but one of
them must either be slightly too fast or slightly too
slow.

I think the fade on the CD may start slightly earlier,
but both the 45 and the CD extend out to roughly the same
point.

I can't tell if there's an overall mix difference between
the CD and the 45 - my 45 has been beaten to death (it
was one of the first 45s I ever owned; my grandfather got
me a pile of white-label promo 45s when I was about 3 or
4). The CD is certainly much cleaner, but the 45 seems
to have more oomph.

I compared the stereo versions on the 2-CD
Anthology and on Motown Year By Year 1970,
and one of them has their left/right channels reversed.
On Anthology, the ride cymbal is mostly on the
left channel during the intro. On Year By Year,
it's mostly on the right. I couldn't detect any noise
reduction on either one, but there's plenty of hiss on
the fade on Year By Year, but none at all on
Anthology.

This is one of my all-time favorite songs, ever.

interesting one here.....the cd 'ultimate collection' which
is one of two mono versions in the db runs 3:34 and
contains an edit of 0:04 near the end of the song....this
