Maybe the song just wasn't recorded all that well? I hear a lot of high-end distortion on the vocals, much like what I'd hear from a worn-out 45.

I have the 4:45 version on Rhino's Didn't It Blow Your Mind Vol. 11 (1991), and it sounds fine, aside from the vocal distortion. Nice EQ, nice dynamic range, no evidence of noise reduction on the fade. The same analog transfer is used on:

• Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 16 Sweet Nothings (1997) - cuts off the first 3.4 seconds of chatter, then is digitally exactly 1.5 dB quieter thereafter; avoid
• Time-Life's 2-CD Body And Soul Vol. 12 After Dark (1999) - differently EQ'd digital clone
