Atlantic/Atco was one of the last to abandon this practice, continuing to make mono promo LPs until 1973, though the releases seem to have been a bit selective/intermittent over the last couple of years. Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy was one of the last titles in the series, possibly the very last. A couple of months ago, someone sold a mono promo of the Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers from this series on eBay -- Rolling Stones Records was distributed by Atlantic/Atco at the time -- for $3,250!

The Atlantic/Atco mono promo LPs typically came in standard stock stereo covers, but with a sticker indicating that they were mono D.J. copies. They have white promo labels. Catalog numbers are the same as the stock versions except that the mono promos lack the stereo "SD" prefix on their labels. At least some of the earlier ones are reportedly dedicated mono mixes, but I wouldn't assume that's true for all of them.

Edited by MCT1

Although my promo and stock 45s were pressed at different plants (Specialty and Monarch, respectively) the mono side of the promo and the mono stock A-side utilized the same stamper. Other than the Specialty logo and the Monarch delta number and logo, all other deadwax info is identical, in the same script with the same placement. So the mono stock and mono promo - at least on my two copies - are identical.

Mono DJ 45 and mono stock 45 listed time is (3:06), actual time is (3:07).
Stereo DJ 45 listed time is (3:06), actual time is (3:41).

After Mike Pinera joined the reconstituted Cactus, the New Cactus Band recorded "Daddy Ain't Gone" (Atco 6927), a 1973 sequel of sorts to "Ride Captain Ride." The new single didn't chart, although its parent album Son Of Cactus did.

Edited by Yah Shure
