The LP version does not have the kick drum on every beat. So right off the bat you can tell if you have an LP edit.

The US promo 12" with the Album Version on one side and Single Version on the other is indeed the album version and the US 45 version.

The US 45 is not an edit of the LP version because it has a kick drum on every beat. Congas start at 0:17 right before the lyrics. The break at 2:25 has no kick drum but extra percussion as compared to the UK 45.

The UK 45 & video version also has the kick drum on every beat and jumps right into horns and congas at the start. The kick drum is plainly heard in the break at 2:25.

The version on On the Edge is the US 45 version.

The version on 87 Hits Out (Australian CD) is the UK 45 & video version.

I am still curious to know what is on the US promo 45(s)!

I have both files of the Single Mix and the 45 Edit which
the 45 Edit is from the On The Edge compilation. I saw it
mentioned in one of the comments before that the
difference is the horns at the front of it in the single

I didn't do a detailed A/B comparison, but I quickly gave a listen to both my promo 45 and promo 12" single, and there are obvious differences between the two formats. The promo 45 has a label matrix of ZSS 175492 and has the same version on both sides (I played each side to confirm). This version sounds like an edit of the LP mix, which is consistent with what others here have reported. That sounds plausible to me. Trying to find the video
version/ny mix edit on cd is challenging because the
remix credits and track length are the same. I'm
curious which version is considered the hit version in

By the way, my promo 45 with both sides
the LP edit says it's mixed by Steve
Thompson & Michael Barbiero. I don't
believe it is - it sounds more like
English producer Chris Kimsey mixed it.

Thompson & Barbiero are both native New
Yorkers which is probably why the remix is
called 'NY Mix'. The remix does sound like
their work.

Pure conjecture on my part; does anyone
else concur?
