Author: MMathews
Subject: 463
Posted: 20 October 2005 at 2:41pm

Hi

I was just investigating this song last night. A friend gave me a dub of the 45, and had asked awhile ago if I could see if the LP could be edited to make the 45. Finally got around to it.
This may be old news for some - but for anyone else, figured i'd note it here:
No, you cannot edit the 45 version from "An Evening With John Denver" album version. First, as my friend pointed out the 45 has a clean intro with no applause over it.
(he thought thay might have used the studio version for the intro, but i reminded him that just about all audience effects are usually added and/or removed in the mixing process quite easily).

But additionally, the vocal take is a different one -either from another performance OR simply recorded fresh in the studio, which is likely because they also decided to double-track his vocal on the choruses (difficult to do 'live'). There are also mixing differences through-out to accomodate it having one verse, building to one end chorus; and besides having a double-tracked vocal also has tambourine overdubs not on the album.
So, the 45 mix is quite unique to the single, it's a shame it goes overlooked for one reissue after another.
