Author: Brian W.
Subject: 4715
Posted: 11 March 2009 at 10:51pm

According to Steve Hoffman in the liner notes for the Creedence vinyl LPs set he mastered for Acoustic Sounds, ALL their mono singles and albums were fold-downs of the stereo versions:

The reason that several Creedence hits such as "Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising" and "Lodi" were mixed in very narrow stereo (so narrow that many people don't even realize that they are in stereo, but they are) is that around that time (1968) the record companies started phasing out mono LPs. In those days, one did a dedicated mono mix and a stereo mix. Since mono albums were no more, John Fogerty reportedly wanted his mixes to be compatible when combined to mono, so he purposely made the narrowest mixes he could. The important thing to remember is that Fogerty only mixed these songs once. This, he felt, was the "fairy dust mix," the one that had the soul. He didn't think he could get that again, so that one mix had to do for everything. The original Fantasy seven-inch 45 RPM singles of every Creedence song are mono fold downs from these mixes. Nothing was ever mixed twice on a Creedence album. Just the one mix.

http://www.pamelaharris.biz/images/print/CCRbooklet.pdf

Edited by Brian W.

What's the difference between the mono & stereo mixes of their songs? Aside from the "barrel" effect on some releases of BMR, I can't say I've noticed much difference.
