Author: davidlg1971
Subject: 473
Posted: 23 November 2025 at 11:14pm

I want to clarify the distinction between the single version of Twilight and its appearances on CD compilations.

Twilight is part of a suite on the ELO album Time. The first song (Prologue) builds into Twilight, with swelling sound effects that lead to the main synthesizer riff (four epic-sounding notes - G-C-E-F). And then at the end of the song, as the last note fades out there are backwards vocals that come in, sounding a bit like singing angels, which transition into the next track.

Elements of these transitions are included in just about every release of Twilight - on the Time album, on the vinyl singles, and on CD compilations. In other words - the album mix is the only one available. But CD comps vary in length due to where they start and stop the track - how much of the beginning and end transitions they include.

I have the Twilight 12” single, and a copy of Another Prof’s 45 rip; their timings match up pretty closely:
Total length - 3:29.750
Fade-in to full volume - 2.460
Time until 1st synthesizer note is heard - 4.990
Fade-out - ~1.9 seconds of the “singing angels” can be heard as it quickly fades to silence

You can hear a (poor) recording of the 45 here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oagsfSPz_os

Compilation versions

Most CD compilations with Twilight - that do not include the Prologue intro - usually include 5+ seconds of the intro transition, and/or 5+ seconds of the outro singing - which is why on compilations it typically runs from 3:37 to 3:42.

The good news is that the single version is easily recreated from any CD copy of Time, and many other compilations Twilight appears on, as they usually include enough audio from the Prologue intro (~5 seconds) and outro (~2 seconds) to accommodate the trimming and fading necessary.

Edited by davidlg1971 - 23 November 2025 at 11:21pm

I think what's causing some confusion here is determining what officially constitutes as the "LP version". I have "Twilight" on an ELO 2-CD UK import compilation called Light Years: The Very Best of (Eric 489039) where the song runs 3:36 and has all traces of the "Prologue" completely removed from the intro, just like on the 45. But when comparing the "Twilight" track from the Light Years import CD to the 45, I found the import disc has a :02 longer fade-in and a :06 longer fade-out than on the 45. Thus, I assumed the "Twilight" track from the import disc to be the "complete, pure, and untainted" LP version where there is no audio from neighboring tracks segueing over the intro or outro.

Todd (Paul), I just ordered this CD from Amazon, though it says it's from Sony/Canada. Hopefully, it's the same CD as your UK CD. The description says it has all the 7" radio edits. Does your CD have any other single versions that aren't on any US CDs? The Amazon listing doesn't give any timings, so it's hard to tell if their claim is true.

Also, due to segueing from the previous track, are you saying the "Twilight" single version can be gotten from this but not any of the US CDs?

I am one who is of the opinion that it should not (I think a simple comment that they segue into each other is sufficient), but I know you differ with me on this, Pat, and of course I respect your final decision on how to handle such cases as these.

Edited by Todd Ireland

But now I'm wondering if that's accurate. Pat, are you saying that all US CDs that are attempting to eliminate the Prologue and, thus, re-create the single version are actually failing to create the true 45 because there's instrument bleedout (like strings) from the previous track but that there's none on the mix used for the 45?
