Author: MMathews
Subject: 5038
Posted: 31 December 2014 at 3:13am

Regarding the Teddy Bears and David Seville, they were
never released on an LP or a 45 in stereo. They
are stereo mixes made in the CD era. "Witch Doctor" was
mixed to stereo by Ron Furmanek from the 3-track session
tapes. He mixed that in the mid 90's.

The Teddy Bears in stereo was mixed using an undubbed
stage tape as Tom describes above. Not the greatest
stereo on that one, but those sessions were very crudely
recorded.

"Magic Moments" was a sync-up, using a 2-track session
tape of an alternate, undubbed take. That 2-track was the
ONLY session tape in the RCA vault for this song other
than the mono master. This tape was provided to me by my
engineer friend who had already been through the vault,
every RCA session reel for Perry Como. So since this was
all he could find, he asked me if I could do something
with it, he really wanted to hear it stereo.
So, I found that parts of this alternate take were used
in the final hit, but other parts were not. This told me
that the hit version was edited together from multiple
takes. That's why I'm sorta doubting a true stereo mix
was ever done prior to this sync-up.
I wish it didn't have to be a sync-up, but
alas that's all we had to work with. Considering our
great limitations, I thought it came out pretty good.

Mark M

Edited by MMathews

It was recorded to 2-track and i've heard that the song did get released in 2-track on some obscure compilation at some point in the last 50 years. But, why mention just one song in the list as being DES/DCS (Torero - Renato Carosone) if other songs are as well?

Magic Moments by Perry Como in a NEW stereo mix????

If these are real, true stereo, then i'm in heaven and that cd becomes an instant must for me....if real stereo, i am assuming the Perry Como would be a 2-track mix then, and hopefully not narrowed at all, since it is easier for a person with computer programs to narrow a song to their liking than it is to widen a song and have it sound as if it was never narrowed....but where on earth did that David Seville in stereo come from?

To Know Him, Is to Love Him - The Teddy Bears (new stereo mix)

As best as I know this will be a sync up using the known undubbed master synced with the final mono mix....basically the only thing that should be separate in this mix is the overdubbed drumbeat and i believe maybe some background vocals. I am curious as to how the final result will sound, having heard some rough sync ups of the two versions in the past. I would be shocked if any actual multitrack tapes turned up for this tune....and would rather the B side of the record turn up on cd in clean mono from a tape source.

Happiness Street (Corner Sunshine Square) - Tony Bennett

Very nice to see this turn up on cd, it's always been a favorite of mine.

I just wish the session tapes for the two Johnny Mathis tunes could turn up, they were cut on 2-track sessions, but the tapes are missing. Having heard a DES of Wonderful! Wonderful!, it would sound great in a 2-track mix from a tape source.

By the way, isn't the stereo version of Manhattan Spiritual an entirely different recording than the mono version? I've tried syncing up the two, and while their sound is similar, they don't sync up well, and the mixes are definitely different for sure if they are in fact the same take.

Edited by TomDiehl1

I can see the compilers go through the BB and/or other charts to check out "high charting" songs that have yet to appear (or are rare) on CD. A much welcomed approach!

My only comment, regarding Mantovani "Around The World", I have it from a guru (yes...a Mantovani guru) that the stereo recording found on "Golden Hits" was recorded Tuesday 16 December 1958 and was issued on 33 rpm on Decca LK 4316/SKL 4067 and London LL 3117/PS 164 in 1959; the original mono recording was done Monday 15 April 1957 and was issued on 45 rpm on Decca F 10888, London 45-1746. Is it this mono recording that has been found in stereo?
