Granted, the vinyl surface noise is very loud and it's possible some final traces of music audio at the end of the fade out are buried under the noise. However, I cranked up the volume and made what I believe is an accurate judgment of the end point at 3:21.

    Author: crapfromthepast
Subject: 5281
Posted: 08 December 2009 at 8:07pm

I was comparing the 45 version on The Very Best Of Otis Redding (Rhino, 1992; digitally identical to the Stax/Volt box from 1991) to the mono LP version on Time-Life's Legends Of Soul - Otis Redding (R616-03, 2001; differently-EQ'd digital clone of Atco's Classic Recordings from 1991), and I noticed that the 45 is an edit and an early fade of the LP version. (The 45 version also seems much faster, but I don't know how accurate that Atco CD is.)

For the 45, the edit occurs at 2:51, at the snare hit right before the word "tenderness".

For the LP version, 32 beats are edited out, "tenderness" to "tenderness", from 2:54 to 3:12.

The 45 also fades about 5 seconds earlier than the LP version.

So, the designation should be "45 version" and "LP version"; the 1955-1996 edition of the book has "45 length" and "LP length".
