So, anyone aware of this set? Are they really the single versions or is it erroneous? Needle drops? If they are needle drops what do they sound like? Thanks!

I don't know if it's the same set to which you refer (since you mention it being a double disc set), but I have a four disc Mamas & Papas set titled, Complete Anthology, issued by Universal in the UK in 2004. (At the time, Collectors' Choice was selling copies autographed by Michelle Phillips.) There are two tracks on the set described as 'single version', "Creeque Alley" and "Words Of Love". Both are vinyl dubs. As is the case with the All The Leaves Are Brown set, the version presented as the single version of "Creeque Alley" is actually the mono LP version. The disc dubs sound so similar to those on the All The Leaves Are Brown set that I suspect they were copied from this set.

As has been discussed elsewhere on this board, some time after ABC Records purchased Dunhill, there was a purge during which just about everything other than the reels containing the stereo LP masters were destroyed. ABC Records was in turn purchased by MCA in the late 1970s.

In many (if not all) countries outside the US (including the UK and Canada), the Dunhill material was issued on RCA. People have been wondering for a long time whether mono and 45 masters might still exist in any of these countries. The big question is: When RCA lost the rights to the Dunhill material in these countries after the MCA purchase of ABC, what happened to the tapes of which RCA had physical possession. Did they send them to MCA (now Universal) in each of their respective countries, did they keep them, or did they destroy them?

Since the Universal UK set contains vinyl dubs of the mono material, it unfortunately would appear that they do not have the mono tapes. Was it ever revealed where in the UK the mono If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears tapes were found? In the Universal vaults or in the RCA vaults?

One indication that RCA in Canada no longer has mono tapes is that I have a Canadian RCA re-issue single (most likely pressed in the mid 1970's) that has "I Saw Her Again" on one side and "Creeque Alley" on the other. Although the run times printed on the label are the run times of the 45 versions, both songs on this re-issue are mono versions of the stereo LP versions. [My original Canadian RCA 45 of "I Saw Her Again" is the same as the US 45. I don't have an original Canadian 45 of "Creeque Alley."]

So the Sundazed CD has the correct mono LP length.

Pat, if you add the Sundazed CD to the database, you might want to add a note that the mono LP version runs 3:03.

Edited by Brian W.
