As noted in another post (search under the cd title listed below), the 45 version of "Josephine" can be found on the import cd "Complete Pop Instrumental Hits of the Sixties, Vol. 1 - 1960". I'm glad I can replace my 45 of this one, thanks to producer Bill Buster and crew.

For those of you that only have the 45, that same "twirl" I was trying to explain at :07 on the cd can be found on both the 45 & cd at around 1:13-1:14, but the notes sound a little faster coming out of it on the cd at that point.

I think my initial perceptions regarding the speed differences between the two versions may not be correct. I'm afraid I'm only going by what my ears tell me and the beginning sounded different to me for some reason I can't explain. Like I said, though, my 45 is in rough shape.

Help, anyone??

Todd -

I have the Hi 174 (UK) cd you mentioned (as well as the 45, albeit in VERY rough shape). I didn't listen all the way through but I could tell within the first 10 seconds that, although close, they appear to be different versions. At about 7 seconds in on the cd, there is (I don't know if I'm describing it correctly), an organ "twirl", where it sounds as if 3 or more notes are played in rapid succession, that is not present on the 45. Also, the 45 does sound to me to be a bit faster, at least at the beginning.

For what it's worth, the endings sound the same.

I have what appears to be the hit recording of "Josephine" on two Bill Black's Combo import CD reissues:

Bill Black's Greatest Hits ~ Bill Black's Combo Goes West (Hi Records 174) (U.K.)

The Hi Records Masters (Hi Records 31) (U.K.)

However, on both discs the song runs 2:24 and ends cold, so I'm wondering if the song plays at a slower speed on the CDs than on the 45? My commercial 45, confirmed as Hi 2022, has both a listed & actual time of (2:22).
