It's like EdisonLite says--it makes it easy for us "editors" to determine if we need to match edits or just fade early when making our own 45 length/version.]]>

Consider Foghat's "Slow Ride", though.  The 45 runs roughly (3:55), the LP runs roughly (8:12)--give or take a second or two.  Unless I'm missing something (and I certainly could be), there's no real discernable edit in the 45--it just fades much, much earlier than the LP.  Granted, we're talking about a four-plus minute difference in time (as opposed to the 40-41 seconds in "We Are The World"), but the same priniciple applies.<br /><br />I don't have a problem either way.]]>

As a reader, when I see the word "length" I automatically know that there's just a difference in length between the two and nothing more, which is the case with "We Are The World."]]>

If so, from that standpoint I can see the 45 version/LP version designation (because it's not really a matter of the choruses just continuing on for 40 more seconds before the LP fade).]]>
