Yes, it is, Doug. Promo copies of Close To The Edge were specially banded, and the "And You And I" Part I commercial 45 basically comprised the first three bands of side two, except that it faded out just before the "5:50" spiral noted on the LP label.

But the LP track plays at the same speed as the DJ 45 edit. I hadn't listened to my stock 45 since the '70s (guess I was a bit more of a Yes fan at the time than in the ensuing years) but when I did play it the other day, Part II didn't sound at all like what I'd remembered hearing back in the day. But Part I did.

Thanks to the DJ 45 "Part I" dub supplied by John, I discovered that the entire DJ 45 edit is found within Part I of the commercial 45. The promo sheds the long acoustic intro from the Part I stock 45, and fades out a minute or so earlier than the stock single. I couldn't detect any other edit, but did notice that the DJ 45 runs slower than the stock; I had to slow the stock copy down by almost 1% to keep the two in sync.

Wondering how Part II could have been considered the hit when none of it had been serviced to top 40 radio via the DJ 45, I looked the song up in Whitburn's 1970s Hot 100 charts book and found the answer to the mystery: Over the course of the single's seven-week chart span, Billboard listed the title during its first three weeks as "And You And I". From weeks four through seven - which included its #42 peak - the title was listed as "And You And I (Part 1)". So the Pop Singles book was in error when it listed Part II as the hit side (as it also did in the 1955-2002 edition.).

Doug, I can say that the DJ 45 can be replicated from Part I of the commercial 45, with an additional speed adjustment. My stereo stock copy's listed times are (5:45) for Part I and (4:12) for Part II.

I heard neither the promo nor stock single on commercial radio at the time, but did play the DJ 45 in college.

Interesting. So I guess radio played the edited promo, and the commercial single was the full length Part 1 on one side and the full length Part 2 on the other.
