Author: aaronk
Subject: 576
Posted: 29 January 2017 at 11:57am

I'm close to sorting out all of the various mixes on this one. I just
purchased a 1-track US promo CD single, which I'm waiting to arrive in
the mail. The listed details are:

Next Plateau (NPCD50157)
1. The Original Recipe Mix (listed 4:40)

In all my years of collecting, I had never seen this promo until the other
day, but it appears this was truly the first issued promo CD single, as it
likely contains the original Blacks' Magic LP version and carries no
"RE" designation in the catalog number.

I also had a friend of mine send me a copy from his Blacks' Magic
CD, and it runs an actual 4:42. Surprisingly, I had never heard this mix
before! It is the one described above that starts with "Punch it! Herb,"
and has a completely different beat compared with the hit version. (The
5:55 "Club" version on the remix promo also has the "Punch It!" toward
the beginning, and it's this longer version that has the same beat
and instrumentation as the hit 3:30 edit.)

To summarize:

- The Original Recipe Mix (4:42) appears on the original pressing
of Blacks' Magic and (most likely) US promo CD single
NPCD50157.
- The Original Recipe Remix - Radio (3:30), also known on
imports as the True Confessions Edit, appears on the second pressing
of Blacks' Magic, US cassette single, and US promo CD single
NPCD50157 RE-2.
- Super Crispy Remix (4:44) appears on the US cassette single,
US promo CD single NPCD50157RE-1, and A Blitz Of Salt-N-Pepa
Hits.

All of the above three mixes are completely different in instrumentation,
but the vocal take is the same between the Original Recipe Mix and
Original Recipe Remix versions. The Super Crispy Remix, as noted
above, has a different vocal take and lyrics.

In addition, the longer 5:55 "Club" version of The Original Recipe Remix
appears on US promo CD NPCD50157 RE-2, but I am not aware if this
version appears on any full-length albums.

Edited by aaronk

I timed it at about (4:40), which is the stated time. The cassette single states that this version is from the Blitz Of Salt-N-Pepa Hits album.

The other side of my US commercial cassette single is called the "Original Recipe Side" and contains the "Original Recipe Remix". The cassette single itself states the run time as (4:40), its cover states it as (3:33), but I timed it at about (3:30). This version starts with the line "Spinderella, cut it up one time" and is the version I remember hearing. The cassette single states that this version is from the Blacks' Magic album.

For what it's worth, the two versions on my Canadian commercial cassette single are the "True Confessions Edit", which to my ears - as Brian mentions above - is exactly the same as the "Original Recipe Remix" on the US commercial single, and the "Original Recipe Mix", which is the version that starts with "Punch It" (this version does not appear on the US commercial cassette single).

Edited by Paul C

Here's what I do know, though:

- NPCD50157RE-1 was likely the first issued promo CD single with the "Super Crispy Remix" (same version issued on the cassette single and "Blitz" CD).

- NPCD50157RE-2 was likely the second issued promo CD and contains the "Original Recipe Remix" (the 3:30 version that Pat currently has labeled "LP version" and also appears on imports as the "True Confessions Edit"). This promo CD states it is remixed by Ben Liebrand.

The import CD single that Brian has, according to his post above, contains the "Original Recipe Mix" (not remix) running 4:41. This CD also does not list a remix credit for that track, but it does show that the "True Confessions Edit" is remixed by Ben Liebrand. I presumed the "Original Recipe Mix" was the LP version, which is listed on the Blacks' Magic CD as running 4:40; however, it would be great to have evidence that a US pressing exists with an actual 4:40 run time.
