I don't really remember hearing this song on CHR/pop radio, but rhythmic stations definitely played it. The song peaked at #4 on the R&R CHR/Rhythmic chart. During my time working for Mediabase 24/7, the remix
version was the only version I ever encountered.

In organizing my 1999 top 10, can we get some more input if the remix is the hit version here? I never heard 808. Aaron I know Jim did a post in which he showed what tracks were on the single, but did not address the remix version.

I'm not sure if I still have my copy of the full-length album, but I do have the CD maxi single you reference. What accounts for the time difference between the actual LP version and the CD single "LP Version"?

I don't recall hearing "808" on my local top 40 station. It only peaked at #46 on the R&R CHR/Pop chart. At the time the song was a hit, there were no rhythmic or urban stations in the area where I was living, either.

You are correct, though, that the "Remix" is not simply a remix in the way we would normally use the term. It's a completely different song--new lyrics and new backing track. In hip-hop, it's pretty common for a "remix" to be a completely different song. There are countless examples. Going through my 90s stuff and pulled out my Blaque CD AND the CD single for 808 and realized something. What is considered the LP version is absolutely not the version I used to hear on the radio. It's more of a slow jam, while the remix on the CD single is drum n bass mix that is the version with which I'm familiar. In fact, it doesn't even sound like the same vocal take--or even the same melody. They sound like two completely different songs--the chorus on the remix has this whole 'she ain't got the junk in her trunk' chorus and that isn't on the LP version. AND, what's called the "LP version" on the CD single only runs 4:15, while the actual LP version runs 5:07.
