A buddy of mine recently gave me a Shirelles 45 with a white label but no promo markings on it at all, except for an X in pen on one label. The record belonged to his sister from back in the 60's, and in the pile of 45's he had shown me, there was only one other promo 45 among them, most likely won as a radio station giveaway...

MOST Scepter 45's I've seen state promo copy on them (not for this release, mind you, but for others), however I have seen a couple with the regular red stock labels and "Promotional Copy" in the same print color as the rest of the text on the label....

In fact, checking ebay, there seems to be a white label copy of What Does A Girl Do (Scepter 1259) (and if I recall offhand this is the same white label 45 I was given) that has no promo markings on the label but several red X's in marker and a "Plug Side" stamp on the label. There appears to be more than one pressing of it with a white label and no promo info, too, as I found another on styrene while the first I saw was on vinyl....There are also multiple copies of the stock red label 45 for this title on ebay as well.... so in my opinion, your white label copy with no identification, is indeed a promo copy.

    Author: jimct
Subject: 5908
Posted: 15 September 2010 at 9:01pm

My commercial 45, confirmed as Scepter 1248 with deadwax info of "SCEPTER 1248A ZTSP 87218-1E", has a listed time of (2:21) and an actual time of (2:19). I only post this info because current database CDs have run times ranging from (2:13) to (2:18). I also have a question here. My 45 has a white label (unusual for a Scepter commercial copy), is pressed on vinyl, and includes the proper stock B-side. But nowhere on the label (aside from its color) is there any "official" mention that it is a DJ or promo copy. I do know that sometimes companies will issue commercial 45s on a white label, but I've also known of times where white label 45 copies were sent to radio without any other declarations that it was, in fact, a promo. Does anyone have knowledge of how Scepter was issuing/handling promo 45s in 1963? Any help would be appreciated, as I'd like to ensure that I file this 45 in its proper category.

Edited by jimct
