I typed that to prove a point. If a single doesn't hit the Top 40, it is not considered a hit. That's a well-established fact (not mine). Now you are trying to apply common sense and logic to decide what is the real hit version is, but you don't want to apply the same logic and common sense when a record company decides not to commercially release a single version and instead decides to include an 5 minute album version or a 6 minute remix as track 1 on the commercial single.

Are you a database subscriber? If not, then that might explain why it's difficult for you to understand the very simple "rules" that we use.

In the database, Pat very rarely mentions "hit version" at all. In the few cases where he does, it's typically to distinguish between an early, non-hit release that was later re-issued (perhaps remixed or perhaps even re-recorded) and became a hit. In those few cases, "hit version" is mentioned for clarification only. Nobody here is trying to define what is a hit and what is not. For Pat's purposes, he includes consensus top 40 hits: songs that made the top 40 on the major US charts, such as Billboard and Cashbox.

As a reader of the database, when you see a list of CDs containing a particular song, most commonly next to each CD you'll see "45 version" or "LP version." This designation tells us ONE THING. It tells us that the particular CD contains the same version that appears on the 2-track single configuration in the US. That's it. End of story. Period!!! It does not elaborate any further as to what is the "hit" version. That is a bit more subjective, because as you know, the "hit" version could've varied from region to region. Some radio stations may have played a promo-only radio edit. Some may have played a remix. Some may have played the album version. Yes, there was in many cases a consensus among stations as to the version they played, but none of that information matters for the database. "45 version" (aka "single version") is simply a reference for database readers, and that's how it is used here on the forum.

Does that help explain it any better?

Edited by aaronk

This mix is the original
version, the mix found on its parent album being a
remix that fits with the rest of the album. The single
tanked in the U.S., limping to No. 76 on the Hot 100
Singles chart, therefore there no hit version.

Bomb The Bass were red hot in 1988, thanks to Beat Dis
and Buffalo Stance. They were commissioned by Sire,
who were convinced of its hit potential, to remix the
track for a U.S. re-release in 1988. Their labour was
issued as a single in 1988 as "Strangelove '88". The
single version, per Mute / Sure was the Remix Edit, an
edit of the Highjack Remix. This release limped to No.
50, therefore there's no hit version, since the single
flopped.

"Srangelove '88" was released as a commercial 2-track
CD single (among other formats), one of those 3" CDs.
Track 1 is the Remix Edit. If you're wondering, track
2 is the Remix Edit of "Nothing".

For the 1992 reissues of all Depeche Mode singles,
only the 1987 single was reissued. "Strangelove '88"
was not given the reissue treatment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=r2xSULpDodM

Thanks for the info! As for no hit version,
technically the song charted twice on the Hot 100
(although in different mixes) with a combined total of
15 weeks on the Hot 100 (6 weeks in 1987, and 9 weeks
in 1988). While not technically a "hit" either time,
15 weeks is quite a bit of time for that era of music.
Considering how it has received quite a bit of
recurrent airplay over the years, one could argue that
its "hit" status is not reflected by its peak
positions on the Hot 100.

And this promo CD edit/mix seems to
have long been forgotten, except for radio airplay.

Mark, if I take the first 6 seconds of the "Maxi Mix"
(this is the same synth intro as used in this
edit/mix) and join in an edited "LP Version" (with the
extra effects right before the drums come in) I
believe that I can recreated this edit/mix!
