John is correct; the 1969 Reprise 0845 non-LP single is a dedicated mono mix. Ian Anderson's vocals are mixed a tad wetter on this 45.

Regarding the differences at 2:20: to my ears, this is a mix difference. The Reprise single has both the main and harmony flute parts mixed prominently, and both appear on the first note of the break.

At 2:20 on the 1972 Chrysalis 45, the main flute part is mixed very, very low, but it's there. The harmony flute (in the left channel) doesn't come in until almost 1.3 seconds later. The flutes aren't potted up in the mix for still another 0.4 seconds, and the harmony part never is mixed as prominently as it is on the Reprise single. The upshot is that the violin is left to carry the load from 2:20 to 2:21.7.

There is a speed difference, too. The Reprise single runs slower; its actual time is (3:22). The fade starts later and is not as gradual as it is on the Chrysalis 45. I timed all of the vinyl Chrysalis sides: stereo DJ, mono DJ, commercial 45 and my promo copy of the Living In The Past LP, and each one runs an actual (3:19).

The mono side of the Chrysalis DJ 45 is a fold-down of the 1972 stereo mix, and is not the 1969 mono Reprise version. The stereo Chrysalis DJ 45 is cut hotter than its commercial counterpart. Like John and Aaron, I detect no difference between the 1972 Chrysalis 45 and LP track.

Compared it to STEREO/MONO versions from Stand Up and a copy from the parent CD Living In The Past. Sent them to Aaron for comparison as well. His conclusion, and I concur, is that the Chrysalis 1972 45 and the STEREO versions are the same. Only the MONO copy from Stand Up, apparently the non-hit version, is dramatically different, and doesn't match the hit 45 at all.
