Here we go again; all sources suggest the 7" of "America" by Prince is the same length as the album version.

It is claimed it was called an "edit" because the version Prince wanted on Around The World In A Day runs nearly 22 minutes.

I don't doubt any of that. What I'm having trouble remembering is if the DJ edit (which may or may not have matched the commercial 45) edited out any of the opening starts & stops of the turntable before the song gets into full swing.

The top 40 station I listened to growing up had (as I remember) a slightly truncated intro, missing a "scratch" or two on the opening... I thought. However, the music director swears they pretty much just played whatever was sent.

Does anybody own a promo / radio copy of Prince's "America" that they can compare to the album / CD?

Chances are they're identical; I'd like some independent confirmation, though.

Thanks for your help! I suspect any differences in the opening by taking out a scratch or two would be unnoticed in casual listening and wouldn't affect the length by more than a second or two.

(This recording always fascinated me because it switches to mono right at the beginning of the fade. I just heard the 22 minute "original" version, & it never goes to mono.
