Yes, the breath is very noticeable on the CD, so unless one is listening to a rather dirty and dusty 45 the breath should be audible on the 45 if its on there.

It'll be interesting to find out if the breath is on the A Song for You vinyl LP. Hey guys:

I do NOT hear the breath at the beginning of the 45 (A&M 1322), but I do hear it at the beginning of the "Classics, Vol. 2" cd.

This may be considered minutia to some, but that's never stopped me before... :-)

Regarding the hit original mix of Carpenters' "Hurting Each Other", I've noticed that Karen Carpenter can be heard taking a breath prior to the start of the song on the following CDs:

Yesterday Once More (A&M 6601)
The Singles 1969-1973 (remastered edition) (A&M 828393601)

However, I have other CDs listed below where there is no opening breath and thus the song instead immediately begins with Karen singing the opening verse: "no one in the world ever had a love as sweet as my love":

A Song for You (remastered edition) (A&M 828393511)
The Ultimate Collection (Holland import) (Universal 983584)
