My commercial 45 and all of the radio DJs referred to the song as "Welcome Back" while my friend insisted that the song was titled "Welcome Back, Kotter". Sure enough, he produced his commercial 45 that showed the longer title! As a novice 10 year-old record collector, it was one of the first cases that I can remember where there were two different 45 pressings.

    Author: crapfromthepast
Subject: 6468
Posted: 20 August 2016 at 7:33pm

For what it's worth, from the time I started following pop stuff in 1978, I never once heard the song referred to as "Welcome Back Kotter", just "Welcome Back".

I found just two distinct analog transfers for "Welcome Back". They both sound pretty similar, and both sound pretty good. Nice dynamic range, nice EQ, and no evidence of noise reduction. Nice, long fade with a little hiss at the end - just how I like it.

The first one is on Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 4 1976 (1989). The same analog transfer is used for:

Razor & Tie's More Fabulous '70s (1991; differently-EQ'd digital clone)

JCI's Only Rock 'N Roll 1975-1979 (1994)

Razor & Tie's 2-CD Suddenly '70s (1997)

Time-Life's 2-CD Singers And Songwriters Vol. 4 1976-1977 (2000; digitally identical)

Razor & Tie's 1-CD version of Suddenly '70s (2001; 1.2, 1 and 0.5 dB louder in discrete blocks than 2-CD version)

Time-Life's 2-CD Seventies Music Explosion Vol. 1 Sunshine (2005; digitally exactly 1.4 dB louder)

The other analog transfer is on Rhino's Tube Tunes Vol. 2 The '70s And '80s (1995), and to my ears it sounds like the same source tape. There are digital clones on:

Time-Life's AM Gold Vol. 23 1976 (1996; digitally identical)

Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 40 TV Themes (1996; digitally exactly 0.5 dB quieter)

All of the above sound basically the same, but since I have such a strong bias to all things Rhino (released 1996 or earlier), I'll recommend: Rhino's Tube Tunes Vol. 2 The '70s And '80s (1995). But you really won't be disappointed with any of the others.

Edited by crapfromthepast

As a recording, the re-titled "Welcome Back" makes more sense, since "Kotter" is never mentioned.

Edited by Yah Shure

Was this a first versus
subsequent pressings thing? Just curious about how to
"correctly" title my .flac file. TIA
