If you look at the spectral view of any of the above CDs, you'll see that between 16 kHz and 22 kHz, it's pretty much nothing but tape hiss.  Very high generation tapes on this one.  Here's hoping for a nice vinyl source in my collection, which I'll gladly share :)]]>

    <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="https://top40musiconcd.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=89">crapfromthepast</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> 6580<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> 19&nbsp;September&nbsp;2019 at 9:13pm<br /><br />Aaron's right; the CD versions don't exactly sparkle.  <br /><br />The following discs are listed as "45 length", and use the same analog transfer as Rhino's <em>Didn't It Blow Your Mind Vol. 7</em> (1991):<ul><li>Rhino's cheapie <em>Seventies Smash Hits Vol. 5</em> (1993)</li><li>Time-Life's <em>Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 42 A Loss For Words</em> (1995) - digitally exactly 0.9 dB quieter</li></ul>I have the "LP length" on Rhino's <em>Kurtis Blow Presents The History Of Rap Vol. 1</em> (1997).<br /><br />All of the above have a nice dynamic range, no loudness/clipping issues, a reasonable EQ, no ticks or pops, and no evidence of noise reduction (the high end doesn't disappear on the fade).<br /><br />So they could be much worse!]]>

My guess is that the master tapes suffered the safe fate as most of the other Sussex tapes, and they are gone.  I've heard cassette tapes that sound better than what's available for "Scorpio" on CD.<br /><br />2) The mono 45 is a simple fold-down of the stereo version.  No dedicated mix was created, but it does fade sooner than the LP length.<br /><br />I think I may have a pretty clean LP that I will try to pull and dub.  Surely the original vinyl must sound better than what's on CD.]]>
