The Island disc is about 0.3% or 0.4% slower than the Rhino. You know what Ron, my bad too. I mixed up which versions
faded later. Yes, the Rhino CD has the later fade that
is closer to the 45. But for sound...

I now also closely compared the Rhino with the Island CD
and I agree you're 100% right about the open sound on the
Rhino CD. The Island copy has a little more low-bass like
the 45 has but they did something unfortunate to the hi-
end frequencies. I checked the spectral view and it
appears they used targeted compression as a noise
reduction tool to squash down the upper hi's. But as you
hear that changes the character of things like the hi-
hats.
Too bad because it sounds like Island started with a very
good transfer. But yeah, Rhino & Bill Inglot wins once
again. I can repair the drop out in the intro.

Oops - sorry, Mark. The version you sent is digitally exactly the same as mine. My notes were wrong - there's no left/right phase issue here. That's what I get for transcribing stuff at work without checking it at home first.

Now that I've gotten a chance to listen to both again, it sounds like the Rhino disc has a lot more "air" than the Island disc. Listen to the snare hits on both. On the Island disc, they sounds a little pinched and weird. I can't say for sure that the Island disc has noise reduction on it, but I'm 99% sure that the Rhino disc has no noise reduction.

Hey Ron ... i just sent you a wav file from my copy of
"The Island Story" for your review.
I had to go check it because I didn't pick up any phase
issue on my copy. Sounds crystal clean in mono and my
phase scope is spot on.
I do notice though that my copy was mfg. by the BMG
record
club. That might explain it if the normal copies had a
manufacturing defect at some point, not sure.
The #'s on the inner ring of my disc are: 3 90684-2,2

In my own library, I used the version on Rhino's Have A Nice Day Vol. 15 (1990), despite the dropout in the intro. The same analog transfer is used on Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 33 AM Pop Classics II (1993).

The version on Island's 2-CD The Island Story (1987) has its left and right channels a little out of sync, making the song sound warbly when summed to mono, and screwing up the soundstage. I can add that the version on HAND Vol 15 has a drop out in the opening doo-wop notes.
And for those who look at the small details, on this CD it fades a second sooner than the 45. It runs slower, that's why it seems to be the correct time.

Also, on the Original Sound CD "Memories Of El Monte" the opening doo-wop notes are missing. It also runs even slower making it appear to be the correct time. The channels are also reversed here.

I agree with Ed that "The Island Story" has the full correct single version with no drop-out in the intro and the full fade.

my commercial 45 for the pete wingfield song "eighteen with
a bullet" issued as island 026 states the run time on the
label as 3:30 but actually only runs 3:28 and is identical
to the version on the cd "the island story"......i note
this because at the start of the song the vinyl 45 has the
doo wop intro in the right channel, like the "island story"
cd......but the version on the "super hits of the 70's
volume 15" has the doo wop intro in the left
channel........pat, can you compare the other cds to see
