Author: MMathews
Subject: 6692
Posted: 20 July 2019 at 7:06pm

I can answer some of the above questions and add a little
info for posterity.

Note that the 2 video links above for "Substitute" are
not U.S. 45s. Here's the info the U.S. releases.

1) "Substitute" LP version starts with "Sending love
vibrations" opening.
2) "Substitute" U.S. Polydor 45 starts with "Sam"
opening.

3) "I Will Survive" 45 Version is an early fade of the
12" single/2nd pressing LP version.

4) "I Will Survive" 1st pressing LP version is an edit of
the 12" single version. You can re-create the original LP
version with 2 edits and slightly early fade.
Note my times are approximate as your CD rip may vary
slightly. My source is the UK BBR CD Reissue of the 1st
pressing of "Love Tracks" with the 12" Version added as
one of the bonus tracks.

-First edit: From (3:08) to (4:47) on the downbeat in the
middle of the word "survive."
-Second edit: In your edited file, cut on the snare beat
from (4:41) (the middle of the sax break, 16 beats from
the start of the sax break) to (6:03) on the words "I've
got all...." near the end of the song.
This 2nd edit is a little tricky because in the 12" the
fade has already begun at that (6:03) point - so when you
make the cut the volume drops suddenly about 2 Db. So,
first you'll need to raise the volume at the end til the
edit points match in level. After the 2nd edit your file
will run about (4:58).
Then, create a gradual fade from (4:35) to (4:53).

MM

Edited by MMathews

    Author: EdisonLite
Subject: 6692
Posted: 03 September 2018 at 12:50pm

I've mentioned the story about Gloria's "I Will Survive" elsewhere, but seeing how the song was recently brought up again on the board, and it's an interesting story, I thought I'd share it here:

For those of you who don't know, the original A-side of Gloria's 45 was "Substitute", and at the time its B-side was a little known song called "I Will Survive". "Subst" peaked at #107. Gloria, and the writer/producers Dino Fekaris & Freddie Perren all thought "I Will Survive" was a smash and loved it and truly believed in it from the get-go, when it was just a demo sung by someone else. But her record company didn't like it at all. They were sure "Substitute" was the smash and didn't even really want her to record "I Will Survive". So the producers said to the label, "Well, why don't you let us record 'I Will Survive' with her as the B-side? You need to put something there." Finally, after they all continued to push for that, the label reluctantly agreed to that.

So that's why "I Will Survive" seems like such a wrong choice for a B-side. I believe that Dino & Freddie thought, in negotiating for that, that somehow stations would pick up on "I Will Survive" anyhow.

My understanding is that its popularity was due to the sole responsibility of DJ Richie Kaczor of Studio 54. He discovered it and played it and played until it became an anthem at 54. And then it just spread like wildfire.

It's also kind of similar to how "Music Box Dancer", "I've Never Been to Me" and other songs became hits. It all boiled down to one station or dj that started playing a song that wasn't being promoted to them - and it turned into a huge, national (and international) hit.

Knowing the story behind "I Will Survive" in particular, I find particularly fascinating because the song lived up to its title. Despite the song's odds, it did survive.

Edited by EdisonLite
