Author: Todd Ireland
Subject: 7061
Posted: 26 May 2013 at 11:53am

I was able to listen to a commercial mono 45 dub of The Kingston Trio's "Bad Man Blunder" on YouTube. Ed is correct that the 45 ending does not contain the "bang your dead" lyric. However, the 45 does not fade out several seconds early compared to the stereo mix on my Very Best of compilation. Evidently, the "bang your dead" phrase is dubbed over the final guitar note on the CD.

So my conclusion is that if the lyric appears at the end of "Bad Man Blunder" on the parent vinyl LP, then we would have a 45/LP version discrepancy here. With that said, I thought I'd once again ask if anyone can confirm whether the Kingston Trio's String Along vinyl LP contains the "bang your dead" line at the end of the song?

Edited by Todd Ireland

    Author: Todd Ireland
Subject: 7061
Posted: 16 September 2012 at 10:44am

For what it's worth, I have the Kingston Trio's "Bad Man Blunder" on their Very Best of 2-CD set (Heartland H010-11). It's in stereo and has a run time of 2:35. While this comes very close to matching the 45 run time, what's interesting here though is that it also includes the spoken "bang you're dead" phrase at the end as the final guitar strum is fading out (whereas Ed is saying his 45 fades out right before this phrase is uttered). So I gather then that the song must be sped up on the Very Best of disc?

Also, according to my research, "Bad Man Blunder" appeared on the Kingston Trio's String Along vinyl LP from 1960. Does anyone have a copy of this album who can verify the song's LP run time and whether it contains the "bang you're dead" phrase at the end?

Edited by Todd Ireland
