I'm not sure about BPI discs, but (at least 90s vintage)
TM-Century Hit/Gold Discs used the index feature to
trigger CD jukebox automation systems. The index display
on a CD player would show 1 during the body of the song,
change to 2 at a point that would trigger the next event
then to 3 at the end, presumably to mute that player. I
have quite a few Jones/BPI discs, but I don't think any
of my present CD players display index.

As far as the soft jingling bells at the beginning of CR,
can't say as I blame them for chopping it
off...automation or not, that part is almost inaudible,
even with fairly heavy processing.

Thanks, gentlemen! I've never seen it on any other disc with the intro chopped, so indeed, it was a bit of "poetic license."

If I'm not mistaken, Broadcast Programming eventually became part of Jones / TM Studios / Dial Global. Their discs were designed for automation systems that could play CDs (perhaps even a specific system). Although my old station did not use a CD automation system, we used a ton of their discs on the air. I remember looking for an edit when the song was released but none was available. Which is kind of odd because it sounds like the intro was extended by using the music from the first verse without the vocals to give it the long intro. There's also an obvious splice right before the vocal starts.

Aaron, I don't know if it was later made available as a re-issue 45 (but it's
pretty likely, I'd say, based on its popularity), but in its original release, for
the 1981 Christmas season, it was only issued as a promo 45 (PRO 193 DJ).
Both sides feature the same, listed (5:25) version (I just did a quick timing;
my 45's opening fades in, so, as best as my ears can hear, its actual time is
(5:22). Based on this, Aaron, my conclusion is that the Broadcast
Programming radio comp took some "poetic license" with their chop of the
intro. One final note: my 45 says the song is from the EP, "I Could Rule The
World If I Could Only Get The Parts". I believe that was the only commercially

I realize this is a couple weeks late (and not a top 40 hit), but I have a version of "Christmas Wrapping" (issued on a Broadcast Programming radio compilation) that chops off the first 21 seconds and starts where the drums kick in.
