It starts at 3:09.5, then dips down noticeably 1.85 seconds later. From that point on, the fade is very, very gradual until midway through the word "comes" at 3:25.44, when it drops abruptly before fading out entirely after the word "again" at 3:27.5. That final "again" is just barely audible.

    Author: Todd Ireland
Subject: 7394
Posted: 16 April 2013 at 5:34pm

I've brought up in other threads that the first six Jackson Browne LP releases on the Asylum label were first issued on CD in the '80s and then later remastered in the late '90s. Since both pressings of each CD album appear identical on the outside, the only way to tell the difference between an opened copy of either pressing is by looking at the hub of the CD itself. If there's an "RE-2" etched among the matrix numbers, then it's a remastered disc. If no "RE-2", then it's an original pressing.

At present, the database shows the LP length of Jackson Browne's "Here Come Those Tears Again" appearing on The Pretender CD (Asylum 107) with a run time of 3:36. This matches what's on my original CD pressing. However, the song fades out several seconds sooner on my remastered copy and thus runs only 3:33. I do not detect any mix differences between the two, unlike on original/remastered pressings of at least one other Jackson Browne CD album release.

For what it's worth, I prefer the sound quality on the original CD pressing of The Pretender as the dynamic range is fully intact (as opposed to the remastered disc which contains moderate compression/limiting) and no noise reduction is used.

Edited by Todd Ireland
