MM, you are correct....i just re-timed my vinyl 45 and came
up with 2:20 again.....so, i don't think my original
question was ever answered...do any of the cd's contain the
proper pitch and length 45 version?

I suspect my stock 45 must be counterfeit, since the artist is indicated as "Jimmy Clanton" and not "Johnny Clanton." ;) Then again, judging by the trade ad Vee-Jay took out for the record that's posted at 45cat, the actual title was "Venice In Blue Jeans"!

The label on my copy looks like a much cleaner version of the one on 45cat that has the "Dist. Exc. by Vee Jay, Inc." notation on the right side. There's no stated time, but it actually runs 2:21, disappearing into the hiss just before the 2:22 mark. Deadwax is S-2272" (yes, that's a quotation mark immediately following the numbers.)

Based on the plethora of logos stamped in its deadwax, the best I can guess for this copy's lineage is as follows:

"Sheldon" - mastered by Sheldon in Chicago.

"Nashville Matrix" - metal parts made in Nashville by Matrix of Nashville, right next door to Southern Plastics, where it might have made sense to have it pressed, since Southern often pressed records for Vee-Jay. Perhaps they were backlogged at the moment.

"ARP" - Record pressed at American Record Productions in Owosso, Michigan. Jim, I'm curious to see what Ed's deadwax info says, but in the meantime I can vouch that his pressing runs (2:20). I used his dub to match the pitch and fade to the stereo mix.
Now if you like that, you're gonna love this. I just pulled a copy of this 45 from our warehouse and the description matches your pressing for label copy, and part of the deadwax. Ours runs (2:23)! The pitch is the same as Ed's, but has 3 extra seconds of audio at the end. The deadwax has S-2272 and about 1/4 inch after that is the "Sheldon" logo indicating it was pressed in Chicago. No "86" as yours has. I'm not sure what plant that was.

This reminds of the 45 for "Big Bad John" ... we identified 3 pressing plants for that single but in that case the same master was used for each pressing (same fade point), but each ran a slightly different speed, altering the run time by 1 sec. plus or minus. My commercial 45, confirmed as Ace 8001 with handwritten deadwax info
of "S-22 72" with a stray "86" appearing about 2 inches later, has no listed
time, which is consistent with Ed's earlier report. However, my actual time
is definitely (2:17), which is :03 shorter than Ed's earlier report. Looks like
two commercial 45 pressings exist. All 1962 stock 45 copies I know of
have yellow labels and a "distributed by Vee Jay Records" notation.

But when I see John's note upthread about his Rhapsody search finding all
versions to be :03-:05 seconds shorter than Ed's reported time of (2:20),
and my 45 was in that range, I'd much appreciate it if my buddy Ed could
possibly do a time re-check here, if time allows, just to be sure. Especially
since current db CDs that feature this song have an unusually wide range
of run times: (2:13) to (2:23).

There is a stereo version of this song that will be on a new CD release in the last quarter of this year. Spent the last hour trying to pitch match files I found on
Rhapsody to the 45 to no avail. All come up 3 to 5 seconds
short.

my commercial 45 for the jimmy clanton song 'venus in blue
jeans' issued as ace 8001 does NOT list a run time on the
label but actually runs 2:20......the cd version on 'this
is jimmy clanton' is pitched down and runs
2:23.....BUT...if you pitch up that version to match the
speed of the vinyl 45, the song fades out 0:03 too
early.....do any of the cd version have the correct pitch
and length?
