Author: jimct
Subject: 7789
Posted: 19 November 2013 at 12:46am

Rockdent, to be perfectly honest, you've raised a VERY touchy subject.

The short answer is that this is Pat Downey's site. Pat started the T4MOC
concept, in book form, many years ago. He, and he alone, has always
decided on which songs appear in his database, and why. And which CDs
do and do not qualify for inclusion in his db. And why. Period. You seem
to believe that T4MOC's policies should be based on more of a
democratic, "subscriber/poster-input-should-always-be-welcomed"
basis. More consensus-based than at present, as to its policies. You are
obviously entitled to your opinion, Rockdent. But the reality is that T4MOC
has never operated that way - and I don't see it changing anytime soon.
With all due respect to Pat, T4MOC is an absolute dictatorship. And how
any of us subscribers/posters feel, about any of Pat's db policies, are
totally irrelevant. Pat's db rules have long been etched in stone, and have
never been up for debate. That is Pat's prerogative. He, and he alone,
operates this site. And he runs it his way.

Your "moderator and I have been having a disagreement about this"
surprises none of us veteran T4MOC participants. As "CEO"/moderator,
Pat has long had his reasons, for doing things exactly the way he does.
Remember, Pat made many of these policies over 20 years ago. Even if he
ever wanted to make a major change, doing it now would involve a
massive time commitment from Pat, and surely not be cost-effective, at
this point. Pat doesn't make a lot of money operating T4MOC.

This forum has existed since 2005. Many threads, especially early on,
included making suggestions/providing feedback to Pat, and questioning
various T4MOC policies. Rockdent, the bottom line is that Pat really has
never been interested in any of our T4MOC opinions. He wasn't back in
2005. And he isn't today. Basically, the T4MOC site has always been a
"take it or leave it" proposition. The term "overall consensus" has never
applied here. And if you are feeling some frustration over Pat's stance on
this, I do understand. I am sorry for that. I assure you, you are not the
first. Is T4MOC perfect? No. But is it still a great resource? To me, clearly
yes. When I was a kid, my late mom taught me to "accept what you cannot
change." That advice has served me very well over the years. In my
opinion, I believe her axiom applies here perfectly.

Rockdent, as a newbie, you wouldn't know about any of these
longstanding T4MOC policies. But the ONLY thing your new post, which
questions one of Pat's major, longtime policies, will accomplish now is to
dredge up/re-open old wounds, and feelings of frustration. In fact, your
"If Pat won't see things my way, then I'll throw my take out to the folks
who post here" tactic is simply asking for trouble. I strongly recommend
against "pulling the collective scab off" here. The inevitable result will be
nothing but a long, emotional, unproductive thread, that will only end up
creating anger and frustration for all parties. And with NO change in Pat's
import CD inclusion policy. Honestly, I wish that you'd taken Pat's private
response to you to heart, just left it at that, and opted not to "go public"
with your frustrations. But you did. Hey, you're only human.

So I will now attempt "damage control." I reply to you here very hesitantly,
Rockdent, with fingers crossed, 100% because you are new to T4MOC.
Truthfully, I feel like I'm walking into a hornet's nest. My hope is to
provide you with some insight, while remaining calm, civil and respectful
to all involved T4MOC parties.

Instead of questioning/getting frustrated about some T4MOC policies that
Pat adopted long ago, even those which may appear to be a bit
ambiguous/inconsistent/arbitrary, knowing what I now know, I take a very
different approach to it all. I choose to focus on the many positives that
Pat's T4MOC site provides. I do find the current db CD info very helpful. If
the db ever went away, I would miss it. Pat's annual access fee is very
reasonable, and has never gone up in price, even once, since I first joined
back in 2006. I also find the T4MOC forum to be a wonderful resource.
And, perhaps most importantly, as an aside, Pat's site has allowed me to
form solid friendships, with dozens of like-minded, single-version
enthusiasts/CD collectors.

Rockdent, I hope I've been able to provide you with some perspective. I
mean well, I assure you. The good news for you is that on the T4MOC
forum, Pat does allow us wide latitude, as to topic. So if you ever have a
question about a particular song, and whether it's ever been on an import
CD or not, many of us here do happen to collect them, and we'd be more
than happy to help you.

Sorry if this isn't totally "on-topic". I
contend that based on the criteria set forth to get a CD
listed on this site, this disc strictly doesn't qualify.
On the package it states that it is "Made In Czech
Republic" and it is manufactured by a company with a
London England address. It says "Complete 60s 12201" and
has no U.S. label name, address, etc. that would qualify
it for inclusion. Now, we all know Bill Buster et al and
the great work they do, but I still don't think this disc
fits the website criteria of being a U.S. release. If we
wink wink nudge nudge that of course it is a U.S. release
then how do we know that there are not other quasi grey
type releases that also belong (and I welcome suggestions
in that area!). Thoughts anyone? Thanks.
