I've never heard Nigel Olsson's version of it played on the radio, but Harris used it to demonstrate their AM Stereo system in 1979:

The Paul Davis version of "Little Bit Of Soap" was in heavy rotation on Drake-Chenault's Hit Parade format in 1970, if its local affiliate in St. Paul (KEEY-FM) was any indication.

Adding to the surprise, The Exciters and Paul Davis.

And I consider myself well versed in 70's pop music, HA! Though the Exciters version was 1966 I think.
I'd have to chalk it up to another regional airplay issue. I really don't think the Paul Davis or Nigel Olssen versions were played much on AM or FM here. (Again, never heard them.)

If anyone would have asked me about Bert Berns, I would have known almost nothing as well. The first version of this I ever heard was the Exciters' version back in 1966. Paul Davis took it to #52 in 1970.

I have only ever remembered the Jarmels version of A Little Bit Of Soap. I was surprised to find that Nigel Olssen did a cover in 1979. (Never heard it.)

Even more surprising, I just picked up a set of Soul CDs from Oldies.com, or Nina's Discount oldies. In the 1961 issue of "Soul", I noticed a cover version done

20+ years ago I had a various artists LP from the '80s that had a different take of this on it than the one I've been hearing everywhere else since then (I don't have the 45, and long ago gave away the LP). When the bass singer takes over the lead and sings the word "day" in the phrase "night and day," he didn't go back up to the root note as he does on the version I always hear, I seem to recall he ended on a relatively lower note (the 6th). might the shorter run times possibly be due to the fact that the song's first
stereo appearance was (I believe) on the LP "Laurie Golden Goodies" in 1967
(that also featured a number of other Laurie stereo debuts). Does anyone
have that LP to note the runtime there?

Often when a song is mixed to stereo many years after it was a hit, it is
changed somewhat (fades different, mixing, missing parts...).

my commercial 45 for the jarmels song 'a little bit of
soap' issued as laurie 3098 lists the run time on the
label as 2:17 but actually runs 2:16....i only point this
out because the db has a wide range of run time from 2:07
