I've got just one CD with what sounds like the long TV
version. It's on "Get Down With The Philly Sound: The Dance
Collection" on PIR/Legacy from 2008. The CD case is labeled
"Not For Sale" and the song runs 3:43.

It sounds just like the 45 version except the Three Degrees
prominently sing "Soul Train," "people all over the world,"
and so on.

The oldest CD I have with "TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia)" is Columbia Germany's Mixed Masters Vol. 3 (1989). It's the 5:40-ish version that first appeared on the Philadelphia Classics vinyl LP released in 1977. It sounds just OK here - nice dynamic range, good EQ, no evidence of noise reduction, but likely not the lowest-generation source tapes. There's a differently-EQ'd digital clone on Sony's Forever Soul Vol. 1 (1995), which is far more common and likely far less expensive.

Bill Inglot found some terrific source tapes for Rhino's Didn't It Blow Your Mind Vol. 12 (1991). This version runs 3:34, with a fade from 3:18 to 3:34. Here, it sounds fantastic in every way. The same analog transfer is used on:

• Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 27 Dance Fever (1992)
• Rhino's Rock Instrumental Classics Vol. 3 The '70s (1994) - digitally identical
• Rhino's Billboard Hot Soul Hits 1974 (1995) - digitally identical
• Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 42 A Loss For Words (1995) - digitally exactly 0.9 dB louder
• Rhino's Tube Tunes Vol. 1 The '70s (1995) - digitally identical
• MCA's 3-CD Soul Train 25th Anniversary Hall Of Fame (1995) - digitally exactly 3.388 dB louder and clips a lot; avoid
• Time-Life's AM Gold Vol. 21 1974 (1996) - digitally exactly 1.9 dB louder
• Time-Life's Solid Gold Soul Vol. 9 1974 (1996) - differently-EQ'd digital clone
• Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 43 '70s Dance Party 1972-1974 (1997) - differently EQ'd digital clone
• Time-Life's 2-CD Seventies Music Explosion One-Hit Wonders (2005) - digitally exactly 2.1 dB louder than Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 27 Dance Fever

Finally, there's a different, and pretty terrible-sounding, analog transfer on Razor & Tie's 2-CD Disco Fever (1991). This version runs 3:40, with a very gradual fade from 3:18 to 3:40. There's a differently-EQ'd digital clone on Sony's Collector's Edition Disco (1995).


Discogs lists a printed time of 3:29 for the 45, and 3:43 for the LP. Was there was really a length difference between the two? If so, do the real lengths and fade points correspond with the 3:34 and 3:40 versions above?

I recommend Rhino's Didn't It Blow Your Mind Vol. 12 (1991) for "TSOP". Unless there's a pressing need to hear an additional six seconds of the song, I'd avoid the 3:40 version from Disco Fever, because it sounds awful.

Just noticed that the parent LP of "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" "Love Is
The Message" states the run time as 3:43 on the label. Is that true or a label
misprint? Ed, I timed your file in Audition at exactly 3:31. I switched to spectaral mode zoomed in at the absolute musical start and end points and marked them.
