It's hard to tell that there's a difference, but if you line them up in the multi-tracker, you can hear (and see) that they don't perfectly line up. What they did on the 12" (and stock 45) version is loop the same segment twice. On the 12"/stock 45 the segment from 0:04 to 0:54 is note-for-note identical to the segment that extends from 1:02 to 1:53. In fact, if you overlap those two segments, you get a weird phasing effect. Hmmmm. I thought I re-created the DJ edit with no problem last year. I'll check my work when i get home to see what I missed.
No kidding about it being sped up ... the promo was sped up by almost a full semi-tone which is drastic. For those curious, the "short version" on the promo 45 cannot be extracted from the 12" version. As John reported to Jim, there is unique audio that is nowhere to be found on the 12" or stock 45 version. In fact, it is more than just :10 to :14.5. Sounds like Aaron and I got the same results, as I use
the AT150mlx. The secret is the microline stylus, which
will, literally, cut through the upper crud and play
what's deep in the grooves. I almost trashed my 45 of
Disco Lucy because it sounded damaged on every cart I
played it with until I got the AT150mlx. With that
cart, I was able to track the 45 perfectly and get in on
the hard drive. The difference with me is that I
flattened the EQ with Audition to eliminate the slightly
brighter sound. I also remove any noise present in my

My wife has had the dang melody in her head for a full day after I worked on this one yesterday.

The 45 version runs 3:35.

The section from 0:04.1 to 0:54.8 (downbeat to downbeat) is repeated from 1:02.6 to 1:53.3.

I thought that removing the repeated section (0:04.3 to 1:02.8 in my case) would duplicate the promo 45, but doing so leaves a version that runs 2:36. And based on what I just discovered above, that's clearly not the way to get the promo 45 edit.

A few years back, I upgraded the cartridge on my Technics 1200 to an Ortofon 2M Red. The very first thing I played (and recorded on the hard drive) was my 45 for "Disco Lucy". It sounded good. A little turntable rumble on the fade, and a few little ticks and pops. I was pleased.

Then I heard Aaron's dub of his vinyl 45, which he dubbed with his Audio-Technica AT440 cartridge, and processed using his Aaron vinyl dub magic. It sounded significantly better than mine. Slightly brighter high end overall from the AT440, somehow no turntable rumble, really quite amazing. I asked my buddy Yah Shure (thank you, sir!) if he could analyze my DJ 45
short version promo 45 vs. the stock 45, to see if it could be re-created.
His findings were that approximately :04 1/2 seconds of audio found
early on during the DJ edit (from :10 to :14 1/2) were not at all present on
the stock 45. Additionally, this short version was noticeably sped up, for
which I could also instantly tell from the moment I heard it. He presumes
that the unique audio segment must've come from the 1977 12" single,
which I do happen to also own. I concur with his suspicions. I'm not sure
yet if I ever bought that longer, lone db CD (which is segued) or not, but
I'm thinking the best-sounding "composite mix" would result from
combining my two, clean vinyl sources.     

So once I can get the 12" version's audio forwarded to John, he's up for
further analysis/another crack at it, although I'm sure he's not especially
anxious for Round 2 of "Now I can't get that dang melody out of my
head!", which his first attempt regrettably did bring on!   :)

I received my "Disco Lucy" promo 45 today, and thankfully, it has the
same long/short configuration as the copy I detailed above from Discogs.
Here are the particulars:

Short Version: listed (2:29); actual (2:31). Deadwax: "IS-078-A - 2:29 - DJ
1B SHORT". There are at least two edits: The first "let's go" is sung at :14
on this version, as opposed to at the :26 second mark for the stock/long
promo version. And there is an instrumental passage from around the
(2:05) to (2:25-ish) point of the stock 45, that is removed entirely from
the short version. I will do my best to make sure specific, complete edit
points are posted as soon as possible, for anyone wanting to replicate it.
(By the way, I never remember hearing this "short version" on radio
anywhere in 1977.)

Long Version: listed (3:35); actual (3:34). Deadwax: "IS-078-A - 3:35 - DJ
1A LONG".

A final question. My initial understanding while reading through the
earlier posts in this thread was that "Disco Lucy" promo 45 copies with the
(3:35) stock 45 version on both sides did exist. But now I'm not so sure
about that conclusion. Does anyone else currently own a promo 45 for
this? And, if so, are its contents the same or different than my copy?

Tonight on 45cat, I stumbled upon both sides of a seemingly unique
"Disco Lucy" US promo 45 label scan, uploaded by user "jazzmicke". Both
sides are stereo, and state "IS078-A-DJ". One side of it, noted here as
being the "Long Version", has a listed time of (3:35), and I assume it to be
the same version as both the (3:35) stock and promo 45 copy
documented earlier in this thread. But on the other side of this particular
promo 45 appears to be a previously undiscovered "Short Version". It has
a listed time of (2:29). Tonight I managed to track down a hard-to-find
promo 45 for it, from a rather obscure website that I've only dealt with
once before. That copy has already been bought and paid for, and since
the guys ships on Mondays, it should arrive by Friday. I'm obviously
hoping it's just like the promo 45 I've just detailed above, although it will
more likely be the (3:35)-on-both-sides promo 45.

Just wanted to note the existence of this seemingly unique promo 45
here, for the record. If what I receive does happen to include the
"short/long versions", I'll provide actual time confirmations for both sides,
and I will somehow figure out what's been removed from the (2:29) side.
But if I strike out, I'll make finding a copy similar to the one on 45cat a top
