I think I bought the box set the same day it came out, so it may have been altered at some point.

Andy

Author: Bill Cahill
Subject: 8139
Posted: 29 November 2014 at 5:35pm

There are very few CDs that included the song "Call Me Lightning" but the new double CD version of "The Who Hits 50" finally gives us a mono copy of the hit single, without the simulated stereo effect.

Here's what I believe has been issued so far on CD:

Magic Bus: Simulated stereo version which is the single version mucked up into phoney stereo like the vinyl LP(I don't have all issues of this release though)I suppose that makes this the LP version. But I don't have all issues of the Magic Bus CD, it's been released more than once.

Ultimate Who: Simulated stereo version again just like Magic Bus.

30 Years Maximum R&B.. while this is actually a mono mix there are two differences from the single, first it fades too soon at the end, and second the electric gutar is mixed louder in a few places. At around 1:05 or so there is a piano section, on the original single and phoney stereo issues the piano stays on top of the mix and on top of the electric guitar which is mixed extremely low. On Maximum R&B the guitar mixes up by the last piano note and and almost obliterates the piano. There are other sections of the song where the electric guitar sounds slightly louder than the single or simulated stereo issues, so it sounds like the Maximum R&B issue is an alternate mix.

The "Who Hits 50" matches my 45.
