But what Abagon and I are saying is that the drums begin at a different spot on the 45 and LP, thus making them slightly different recordings. I submit that this crosses the line from "mix" to "version".

Edited by Todd Ireland

This, in my opinion, sounds like the guitars are mixed hotter on the 45, thereby getting a '45 mix' next to the lone database entry. If there were an edit involved along with a mix, then I would say it would be a '45 version'.

Although, for the benefit of my younger clients, I label everything 'single version' or 'single mix' in my business database, I labeled this song 'single mix' in my database.
Many of my brides have no recollection what a 45 is. They have to ask their parents!

There are clearly mix differences... The guitars are louder and buzzier on the 45, while the drums are more punchy and up front on the LP. But I also agree with Abagon that the first drum hit does indeed come in about a half second sooner on the 45 than on the LP. A direct A/B comparison verifies this when the two intros are synchronized. Therefore, I too am of the opinion that database comments for CDs containing "I Won't Forget You" should be revised to state "45 version" or "LP version".

This U.S. commercial 45 version has some differences from the LP version. I could easily understand that only the 45 version has the first drum sound at (0:02.6)! The first drum sound on the LP version is at (0:03.2). However, my stock LP is a Japanese product. Could anyone compare the 45 with the U.S. LP? If the Japan LP is the same as the U.S. LP. Those comments should be changed to the "45 version" or "LP version".

--abagon

It's clear that the 45 is a unique mix. The 1:37 guitar punch that is up front on the 45 is the dead giveaway. Aaron you are on the money on that. The 45 also ran slower on the MP3 I had.

As far as any difference between the Cat Dragged and Best Of, that's a tough one. "Best Of" could be a slight remix, or a mix similar to the LP version that was mislabled, or maybe the group had an earlier version of a 45 on Enigma and not Capitol?

Or, it could simply be that Capitol for "Best Of" used a stereo expander and compressed it. I don't hear any significant difference between the Cat Dragged and Best of Version except in EQ, compression and possibly reverb. The reverb could have been brought up by stereo expansion and compression. Or, like I said, it's a mix very close to the LP version that was mislabeled.

- Bill

I don't hear any difference in background vocals, though. The only differences I can hear are the guitar parts that Ed points out. For example, there's a guitar lick right around 1:37 that's much louder on the 45 (right before the line "although miles come between us"). Also on the "miles come between us" part, there's a difference in the guitar in the background. The LP version has an electric guitar at this part, while the 45 is using some other kind of guitar.
